ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Karlee Koopman tossed a one-hit shutout and Augustana's offense produced 14 hits in an 8-0 five-inning win over Emporia State (14-13) to finish day one 2-0 at the Apple Market Classic hosted by Missouri Western State on Friday afternoon. Augustana (10-8) won both games on Friday by run rule picking up a 12-4 win over Central Oklahoma (19-8) in the first game of the day.
Game oneThe Vikings were trailing Central Oklahoma 3-0 headed into the bottom of the second before going off for nine runs on three hits and two errors to jump in front 9-3.
The Vikings loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning after walks by
Maggie Kadrlik and
Kylie Rome.
Shannon Petersen reached on a fielder's choice in between the two walks and Augustana got on the board when
Maddie Merriam grounded out to short to drive in a run.
The Vikings continued to stay disciplined at the plate, getting two more walks, one which drove ina run and another that loaded the bases back up.
Carly Peterson then stepped to the plate and blasted a 3-2 pitch over the fence down the left field line for a grand slam that gave Augustana a 6-3 lead.
Carley Pickett kept the inning alive with a double to center field and she came around to score when
Sarah Kennedy reached on a fielding error to make the score 7-3.
Maggie Kadrlik made it a 9-3 game with a two-run home run down the left field line.
Augustana added another run in the bottom of the third when Peterson reached on a fielding error that scored
Morgan Beaner to give Augustana a 10-3 lead.
Central Oklahoma answered in the top of the fourth with a run but the Vikings punched right back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two more runs to take an eight-run lead at 12-4. Kennedy scored on a wild pitch and
Kylie Rome made it an eight-run game with a one-out two RBI double.
Central Oklahoma got a leadoff single in the top of the fifth but Pickett slammed the door shut to earn her fifth win of the season. Pickett finished the game with two strikeouts allowing four runs on six hits.
Game twoKoopman (5-4) struck out three batters and got 10 ground ball outs while allowing just one hit in five innings to win her fifth game of the season in the circle.
Augustana had five doubles in the win over the Hornets and had five different players finish the game with two hits.
Carly Peterson finished 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI while
Carley Pickett put together a 2 for 3 day at the plate.
Morgan Beaner was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored.
Kaylea Schorr finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored and
Abby Chandler posed a 2 for 2 day with two singles.
Katie Parker,
Sarah Kennedy and
Maggie Kadrlik also had doubles on the afternoon.
Kennedy drove in the game's first run with a one-out double in the bottom of the first inning to give Augustana a 1-0 lead.
The Vikings and Hornets then played two and a half scoreless innings until the Vikings put up five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth to break the game open with a 6-0 lead. Beaner led off the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI double by Parker.
The Vikings went in front 3-0 when Schorr reached on a wild pitch and Peterson followed with an RBI single to make it a four-run lead. With two outs in the inning, Kadrlik delivered a two-RBI double to right field that pushed Augustana's lead to 6-0.
Koopman set the Hornets down in order in the top of the fifth and the Vikings put the game away in the home-half of the fifth, scoring two runs on five hits.
Beaner led off the inning with a single and quickly got two runners on when
Samantha Eisenreich picked up a pinch-hit infield single. Schorr then drove in a run with a single and Peterson later doubled to left center to drive in the game-winning run giving the Vikings an 8-0 run-rule victory.
Augustana returns to action at the Apple Market Classic on Saturday afternoon with two games. The Vikings will take on Pittsburg State at 12 p.m. and Missouri Southern State at 2 p.m.
