Minnesota State's late rally downs Vikings in NSIC Tournament

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – No. 1 seed Minnesota State scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat No. 4 seed Augustana 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the NSIC Tournament at Sherman Park.

Augustana trailed 2-0 heading into the sixth inning before taking a 3-2 lead on a three-run home run by Maggie Kadrlik.

Minnesota State's Coley Ries held the Vikings to just three hits over the first five innings but the Vikings were able to break through with three in the sixth.

Carly Peterson, who finished the game 2 for 3, led off the sixth with an infield single and Carley Pickett followed with a single to put two runners on with no outs. Two batters later, Kadrlik stepped to the plate and belted an 0-2 pitch over the fence down the right field line to put Augustana in front 3-2.

Minnesota State scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first and took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a leadoff home run by Samantha Buhmann.

Karlee Koopman entered the game for Augustana with no outs in the bottom of the second and was able to get out of the inning without any further damage.

Koopman kept the Vikings in the game pitching around a pair of hits in each of the third and sixth innings. The Mavericks caught a break in the bottom of the seventh when Kelly Grove fouled a ball towards the Augustana dugout and Kayle Schorr's diving attempt saw the ball trickle out of her glove to keep Grove's at bat alive.

Grove singled and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Karli DeLauriers and advanced to third on an error by the Vikings. Grove scored the game-tying run on a wild pitch and two batters later, Dana Mogren blooped one into center field to score McKenzie Paap to give the Mavericks a 4-3 walk-off win.
