BOLIVAR, Mo. – The No. 17 Augustana University soccer team picked up where they left off last season with a convincing victory over Southwest Baptist, 6-1. The Vikings were led by junior
Ellie Knowles, who scored her first two career goals in the win.
Augustana had their chances earlier on having two corners and two shots. Knowles broke through in the 25th minute on a breakaway as she put the ball in the upper left corner of the net from 10 yards out to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
The Vikings took a 1-0 lead into halftime, before the flood gates opened shortly after the second half got underway. Senior
Emily Jacobson scored three minutes after halftime to put the Vikings up 2-0.
Freshman
Claire Dahm scored in the 59th minute on a cross from Jacobson and the rout was on. Knowles (62'), junior
Samantha Tymkowicz (67') and freshman
Grace Behm (71') all scored in a span of 10 minutes to put the Vikings comfortably ahead, 6-0.
Dahm and Behm became the first Vikings to score in their collegiate debuts since 2007 when teammates Jenne Doerneman and Katie Shandri each scored a goal in a 4-0 win against Minnesota Crookston.
The Bearcats would tack on a late goal in the 74th minute to make the final score, 6-1.
Augustana returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 3 for a 1 p.m. game at No. 5 Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo.
