Vikings fall in double overtime thriller to MSU Moorhead Friday night

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – MSU Moorhead's Ayob Ayob scored with 2.4 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift the Dragons to a 91-89 victory over Augustana University (12-5, 7-4 NSIC) on Friday night at the Sioux Falls Arena. The two teams played to 19 tie scores and the game saw 18 lead changes as the Dragons (14-3, 9-2 NSIC) picked up the road win.
 
MSU Moorhead held a 61-58 lead with 3:06 remaining in regulation before Marcus Asmus tied the game at 61 converting a 3-point-play. The Vikings held a 65-63 lead with 1:07 to play before Aaron Lien tied the game at 65 with 51 seconds remaining.
 
Spencer missed a 3-pointer with 37 seconds left and the Dragons turned the ball over with 11 seconds giving the Vikings one last shot for the win. John Warren took one to the rim and had the ball tipped out of bounds and time expired sending the game into overtime.
 
Asmus had a career night for the Vikings recording his first career double-double with career-highs in points (26) and rebounds (10). Adam Beyer went over 1,000 career points in his career after registering his first career double-double. Beyer finished with 21 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Beyer has scored 1,004 points in 117 career games played.
 
Mike Busack pitched in with 17 points and five rebounds while John Warren added 12 points, four rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
 
The Vikings finished the game shooting 41.7 percent from the field hitting 35 of 84, including 7 of 27 (25.9 percent) from behind the arc. Augustana shot 60 percent (12 of 20) from the free throw line.
 
The Dragons were led by Ayob Ayob who scored 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Aaron Lien added 24 points and six boards for MSUM. The Dragons shot 46.5 percent (33 of 71) from the field and hit 11 of 29 (38 percent) from 3-point range.  
 
Augustana was getting great looks from the field early in the contest but the shots weren't dropping and the Dragons jumped out to an early 7-3 lead. The Vikings started out the game 4 of 12 from the field, including 1 of 5 from 3-piont range in the first five minutes and MSUM carried a 12-9 lead into the game's first media timeout with 14:22 remaining in the first half.
 
Warren tied the game at 12 with a 3-pointer out of the game's first media timeout and the two teams battled back-and-forth throughout the remainder of the first half. MSU Moorhead led by four twice over the next 3:44 but the Vikings battled back and took a 22-21 lead after a 3-pointer by Steven Schaefer from the left wing with 7:45 to play in the first.
 
Augustana had two opportunities to add to its lead late in the first half but the Vikings shot just 25 percent (2 of 8) from the free throw line. Warren continued his strong half for the Vikings coming up with a tough basket after taking one hard to the rim giving Augustana a 30-26 lead.
 
MSU Moorhead ended the first half on a 4-0 run and the two teams went into the locker room tied at 32 after a back-and-forth affair in the first. Warren led the Vikings in the first half with 12 points on 5 of 10 shooting.
 
Augustana finished the half shooting 38.2 percent (13 of 34) from the field, including 40 percent (4 of 10) from 3-point range. MSU Moorhead was led by Ayob Ayob's 14 first-half points. The Dragons shot 41.4 percent (12 of 29) from the field, hitting 3 of 10 from behind the arc.
 
The Vikings out-rebounded MSU Moorhead 23-17 and scored 12 points in transition in the first half.
 
Tanner Kretchman hit a pair of early threes for the Dragons and MSUM started the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 39-32 lead. The Vikings rallied to score 10 of the game's next 12 points spreading the ball around to regain the lead at 42-41 after a basket by Asmus with 14:36 to play.
 
The Vikings and Dragons battled it out the remainder of the second half playing to seven tie scores. Augustana took a three-point lead at 55-52 after a 3-pointer by Busack with 6:26 to play but the Dragons scored six straight to regain the lead. Busack tied the game at 58-58 with another triple with 3:41 left in the game and the back-and-forth affair continued.
 
Augustana kept attacking the rim but the Dragons had an answer as the two teams ended regulation tied at 65.
 
MSU Moorhead raced out to a four-point lead in the first overtime going in front 69-65 and led by as much as five. The Vikings scored five straight and got a 3-point-play from Asmus to tie the game at 76 with 32 seconds left in overtime. MSUM scored with 4 seconds left and Beyer ended up taking one coast-to-coast scoring before the buzzer to tie the game at 78 and send it to a second overtime.
 
Busack hit one of his three 3-pointers in the game with 3:21 left in the second overtime giving the Vikings an 83-82. Ayob answered with a triple for the Dragons but the Vikings scored four straight to go in front 87-85 after a basket by Asmus with 1:46 to play.
 
Busack tied things up at 89 with 32 seconds left before Ayob hit the game-winner with 2.4 seconds left helping the Dragons escape with a 91-89 overtime win.
 
Augustana returns to action Saturday night in the NCAA Division II Basketball Showcase on ESPN3. The Vikings host Northern State at 6 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Arena.
