SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana University women's basketball team earned their first win over a ranked team Saturday. The Vikings defeated No. 17 Winona State in blowout fashion, 80-63 to improve to 15-6 overall and 10-4 in the NSIC.
The first-quarter couldn't have been scripted any better for the Vikings. Augustana scored the first five points of the game and got into a quick rhythm. After the Vikings weathered a 9-0 run by the Warriors, Augustana took over and imposed their will the rest of the quarter. The Vikings went on a 6-0 run to take a 13-11 lead. The two teams remained close at 15-15, but the Vikings were able to score seven of the final nine points to end the quarter with a 23-17 lead.
The Vikings stayed on the gas pedal in the second, scoring five quick points. The Vikings earned their first double-digit lead of the contest at the six-minute mark when
Shelby Selland knocked down a jumper to make it 30-19. Just a few possessions the Vikings grabbed their largest lead of the half at 15 after
Logan O'Farrell stole a pass and turned into two on the offensive end. Augustana remained in control the rest of the way, taking a 40-27 lead into the locker room.
The third-quarter proved to be a fight as Winona State (16-4,11-3 NSIC) shot 62 percent in the quarter. The Warriors used an 8-0 run late in the quarter to cut Augustana's lead to two at 52-50. The Vikings matched the Warriors run with a 7-0 run of their own to extend their lead nine. After Winona State scored on a jumper Augustana again went on a 7-0 run that spanned the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth quarter to again go up by double-digits.
Leading 66-52 with under nine to play the Vikings were poised to walk away with the upset win. Augustana took a 20 point lead, their largest of the game, with under five minutes in the game on a
Naomi Rust bucket. Augustana went on to defeat the 17th ranked Warriors 80-63.

Paige Peterson was the spark off the bench for Augustana as she led the team in scoring with 14-points. Peterson hauled in six rebounds, dished out an assist and made her first 3-point basket of the season.
