Vikings Battle Sioux Falls but Fall 21-14

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana football team (3-6) fought tooth and nail against crosstown rival No. 14 Sioux Falls (8-1), but came up short, 21-14, in the battle for the Key to the City at Bob Young Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Vikings were outgained, 360-178, but had an opportunity to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. Ryan Bradberry led the offense with two rushing touchdowns and a two-point conversion and Gage McClanahan provided a spark at quarterback for the Vikings in the second half, in his first extensive game action as a Viking.

The Augustana defense three times held the Cougars to field goals inside the 10-yard line. Kirby Hora (11) and Michael Kloza (10) each notched double digit tackles for the Vikings. Isaac Weber recorded a sack and Trevor Naasz notched his team-best third pick of the season.

USF got the scoring started in the first quarter on a 49-yard touchdown rush from Jason Towns, putting the Cougars up 7-0 halfway through the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Sioux Falls used a 17 play, 89 yard drive but could only muster a field goal. After a Jeff Glassburner punt pinned the Cougars inside their five yard line, Trevor Naasz stepped in front of a Cougar screen pass and returned it to the USF three yard line. The next play Bradberry punched it in on the next play to put the Vikings on the board.

USF would add another field goal before half and lead Augustana 13-6 at halftime. USF outgained the Vikings 244 to 83 yards in the first half, but only held a seven point lead.

The first offensive drive for the Vikings in the third quarter saw Augustana march down the field for a 10-play, 80-yard drive and take its first lead of the game. The big play of the drive came on a double reverse pass from Matt Fujinami that was deflected by Bradberry and caught by Tyler Van Voorst for a 31-yard gain. Bradberry would get his second rushing touchdown of the game and would also score the two-point conversion to give the Vikings a 14-13 lead.

USF started the fourth quarter with a 43-yard field goal to retake the lead, 16-13. The Cougars would add another field halfway through the fourth and would tack on a safety late to win the game 21-14.

Augustana returns to Kirkeby-Over Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 4 as the Vikings take on Concordia-St. Paul at 1 p.m.
