CHADRON, Neb. -- A 17-0 run to start the game set the tone from the beginning as the Augustana men's basketball team rolled to a 73-53 victory over Chadron State Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings have won back-to-back games and improves their record to 5-2 overall, while Chadron State drops to 2-4.
Augustana used a balanced offensive attack as five players scored eight or more points, including three in double figures. Senior guard
Steven Schaefer led the way with a game-high 16 points. The Rapid City, S.D. native was 7-of-14 from the field, hauled in three rebounds and added two assists.
John Warren, a junior from Hopkins, Minn. added 15 points for Augustana and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Warren also brought in a team-high seven rebounds and dished out four assists.
Marcus Asmus, a senior forward from Westminster, Colo. added 10 points.
Jordan Spencer cashed in eight points and a team-high 9 assists.
As a team, the Vikings shot 44.4 percent from the field on 28-of-63 shooting.
Matt Cartwright, a freshman from Sioux Falls, S.D. connected on two of Augustana's eight three-pointers and scored an efficient eight points and corralled six rebounds.
The Vikings held Chadron State to 32 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers. Augustana scored 20 points off of those turnovers. The Vikings out-rebounded Chadron State by one, 36-35 and never trailed in the contest.
Augustana returns to action Friday, Dec. 1 when the Vikings return to NSIC play and take on Concordia St. Paul in St. Paul. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
