Women's Basketball Ties Best Start in Program History with Win Saturday Night

MARSHALL, MINN. -- For just the second time all year, the No. 14 Augustana Vikings were trailing at halftime, but a 9-0 run to start the second half pushed the Vikings to a 91-77 win over Southwest Minnesota State Saturday night inside the R/A Facility.

With the win, Augustana improves to 11-0 overall and 7-0 in NSIC play, which ties the 1996-97 team for the best start in program history.

Presley O'Farrell, a senior guard from Summit, S.D. led all scorers with a career-high 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting and drilled four three-pointers for the Vikings. Logan O'Farrell, Naomi Rust and Paige Peterson each poured in 12 points. Presley O'Farrell corralled a team-high five rebounds.

Augie started out fast and put together a 7-0 run and led SMSU 9-3 out of the gate. Back-to-back three-pointers from junior Shelby Selland and senior Allie Koehn helped the Vikings push their lead to a 20-8 advantage in the first half.

However, the Mustangs came storming back. Sadie Stelter and Sarah Buysee each drilled key three-pointers to cut the Viking lead to just 27-23 with 5:34  left in the first half. A Meleah Reinhart three-pointer capped off a Mustang 6-0 run and pulled SMSU within 34-33. It was a back-and-forth battle the rest of the first half with SMSU taking a 42-40 lead into halftime.

Presley O'Farrell scored the first five points out of the break to spark the Augie 9-0 run to start the second half. SMSU pulled within 56-50 with 3:35 left in the third quarter, but the Vikings never let the Mustangs get any closer from there.

Augustana shot 50 percent from the field and drilled nine three-pointers at a 42 percent clip. The Vikings forced 25 Southwest Minnesota State turnovers and outscored the Mustangs 48-24 inside the paint.

With the loss, SMSU falls to 2-8 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

The Vikings return to action Sunday, Dec. 31 when they travel to the Stewart Center to take on Sioux Falls at 2 p.m.
