Late rally sends Concordia-Portland past Augustana

LAS VEGAS – Concordia University, Portland (1-2) used a three-run top of the fifth inning to sneak past Augustana University softball (1-2) 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Desert Stinger in Las Vegas.
 
Sarah Kennedy led the Vikings at the plate finishing 2 for 4 with a solo home run. Olivia Wolters (0-2) tossed all seven innings striking out a season-high eight batters while allowing four runs on nine hits.
 
The Cavaliers started the game with a leadoff triple which led to the game's first run. Mckenzie Smith singled with one out to drive in Meghan Luebbert to give Concordia-Portland a 1-0 lead. Sarah Kennedy answered for the Vikings in the bottom of the first inning with a one-out solo home run to tie the game at 1-1.
 
After three scoreless innings, Augustana took its first lead of the run in the bottom of the fourth scoring two runs on two hits and one error by the Cavaliers. Maggie Kadrlik started things off with a one-out walk and Christina Pickett followed with a single. Augustana loaded the bases after Kaylea Schorr was hit by a pitch and Abby Chandler gave the Vikings a 2-1 lead reaching on an error and driving in a run.
 
Kylie Rome then stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI single to right field to give Augustana a 3-1 lead. Concordia-Portland put together a three-run rally with two outs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead at 4-3.
 
Augustana left a runner on base in each of the next three innings and was unable to overcome the late rally by the Cavaliers.
 
The Vikings return to action at the Desert Stinger taking on fourth-ranked West Texas A&M at 4 p.m. (CT).
