SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- With one weekend left in the conference season, the Augustana Volleyball team will hit the road and look to finish the year strong. Friday, the Vikings will be thinking upset when they travel to the twin cities to take on No. 6 Concordia-St. Paul at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Augustana will wrap up their season when they take on Minnesota State at 2 p.m. in Mankato.
Most recently, the Vikings (10-14, 5-11 NSIC) fell to Upper Iowa Friday in straight sets and battled with Winona State on Saturday, but came up short losing in four sets.
Individually, there are a number of Vikings who are having a great year.
Courtney Place is currently third in the NSIC in kills with 394 (4.24/set) and eighth in service aces with .39/set. With 380 digs on the year, Senior
Kaylea Ahrens ranks 11th in the conference in digs per set (4.09), and Freshman
Avery Thorson is 11th in the conference in assists with 900 on the season (9.68 per set).
Overall this season, Augustana ranks fifth in the NSIC in service aces per set (1.60) and sixth in digs (16.84). Offensively, the Vikings are tenth in the NSIC in both kills per set (12.29), and assists per set (11.51).
Scouting the Opponent - Concordia-St. Paul
The No. 6 Golden Bears come into this match at 21-6 (15-3 NSIC) on the season. This past weekend, Concordia-St. Paul was ranked No.1, but dropped two conference matches, losing 3-1 to then No. 12 Southwest Minnesota State Friday and getting swept by Sioux Falls on Saturday.
The Golden Bears rank first in the NSIC in kills and assists, second in aces, and third in hitting percentage at .279.
The Golden Bears offense is led by Brooklyn Lewis with 367 kills (3.82/set), Tori Hanson leads the defense with 455 digs (4.49/set), and Elizabeth Mohr leads in assists with 1252 on the season (13.04/set).
Augustana is 1-24 all-time against Concordia-St. Paul.
Scouting the Opponent - Minnesota State
The Mavericks come into this match with a 16-10 (9-9 NSIC) record. Minnesota State dropped two conference matchups last weekend falling to Sioux Falls 3-1 on Friday, and to Southwest Minnesota State Saturday in straight sets.
Minnesota State, who currently sits in at 9th place in NSIC.rank fourth in the NSIC in blocks, sixth in hitting percentage, assists, and aces.
The Mavericks are led by Morgan Olson with 414 kills (4.31/set), Mara Quam with 472 digs (4.92/set), and Micayla Porter has 629 assists which are good for 6.55 per set.
Augustana is 34-29 all-time against Minnesota State.
