The Vikings Return To Sioux Falls Unbeaten After Central Regional Challenge

Shiffler and Hora have career night in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Looking for back-to-back wins to start the season, the Augustana women's basketball team used a solid offensive performance to cruise to a 82-70 win over Southern Nazarene on Saturday. At the conclusion of the two-day event in Kansas City, Mo. the Vikings walk away 2-0 to start their 2018-19 season.

The Vikings first half was fueled by two student-athletes in Janelle Shiffler and Abby Hora. Shiffler notched 19 points by halftime while Hora tallied 14 herself. Shiffler, a redshirt freshman set a career-high in the first half of action. Hora, a junior from Viborg, S.D. was hot in the first half going 6 of 9 from the field, and was 1 of 1 from the charity stripe.

The Vikings outscored the Storm 52-27 going into the intermission. They were shooting nearly 60 percent from both the field and the three point line, while the Storm was only shooting 32 percent on 9 of 26 shot attempts from the field.

The Vikings largest lead was 30 points just minutes before heading into the locker room.

After the break the Vikings slowed down a bit on offense, but not enough for the Storm to get within reach of feeling victory. 

Augustana only scored 30 second half points, but it was enough to hold off the Storm's 43 second half points. The Vikings defense was key to their success, they scored 25 points off of turnovers.

The second half brought more scoring opportunities for Augustana's first half leaders - Shiffler added another five to her 19 first half points, giving her 24 on the afternoon, which is her new career-high. She finished shooting 10-11 shooting from the field, which is just under an astonishing 91 percent and a team best fo the Vikings this season. Shiffler also knocked down all three attempts from downtown, and is  now is 4 of 4 from beyond the the arc this season.

Another Viking that was on the rise in the scoring column the first half was Hora as the guard also  set a career high with 23 points. Hora shot 71 percent from beyond the arc, she was 5 of 7 from three point land. Her previous highest was 18 against Minnesota State dating back to January 5, 2018. Hora finished making 9 of her 13 attempts from the field this afternoon. Her stat line consisted of her career high points (23), six assists, six rebounds in 34 minutes of action.

The Vikings finished the game just over 50 percent from the field and an almost perfect 100 percent from the charity stripe, going 9 of 10.

The Vikings will now head back to Sioux Falls to prepare for their next match-up against Mount Marty on Monday evening. The Vikings and Lancers tip off at 7 p.m. at the Elmen Center.
