Augustana Women's Basketball Shines Vs. Bemidji State

Vikings improve to 12-1 and extend their win streak to seven straight

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Closing out conference play for the 2018 calendar year, No. 14 Augustana women's basketball continued their their uptempo and aggressive style to sail past Bemidji State Sunday afternoon, 97-48. The win extended the Vikings streak to seven straight and improves their record to 12-1 (5-0 NSIC). The Beavers fall to 2-7 (0-5 NSIC). The
97 scored by the Vikings sets a new season high and marks the second game the Vikings have scored above 90 points this season.

The Vikings notched 11 student-athletes in the scoring column. A night after scoring 27, Augustana was again led by Shelby Selland with 23 points and five rebounds. Abby Hora led all players with a game-high seven assists.

Following their seventh straight win, Prosser said the Vikings have found their groove. "We have a lot of talent on our team and I think it is starting to really show" Prosser said. The senior finished with a season high 20 points while grabbing 10 rebounds.

The biggest difference for the Vikings on Sunday was their ability to force turnover and score in transition. Augustana forced 14 turnovers, and outscored the Beavers 25-0 in fast break points. The Vikings also racked up 24 points off turnovers and a remarkable 45 bench points.

Sunday's matinee against Bemidji State started with Selland scoring  a corner three. Followed by a bucket from Janelle Shiffler, the Vikings had a quick five point lead. Gabby Dubois scored the scoring for BSU, but the Vikings went on a five point run to push their lead 10-1 by the media timeout.

The Vikings forced four turnovers in the first 10 minutes of play, and racked up 25 quick points while holding the Beavers to just five points. Bemidji's Maria Appachelli scored the first bucket in the second quarter, but the Vikings held a 38-10 lead midway through the second quarter.

With minutes left in the first half, redshirt freshman Vishe' Rabb hit back-to-back threes from the right wing. Rabb racked up 12 first half points, and the  Vikings took a large lead heading into the locker room, 53-18. In the first 20 minutes, Augustana shot an impressive 21 of 40 (52.6%) from the field and forcing 10 turnovers. Bemidji shot just 5 of 32 from the field (23.5%).

Just as the game started, Selland started the second half scoring and pushed the Vikings lead to 57-18. Leading by 40, Augustana continued their uptempo caliber of play continued to force the Beavers into turnovers.

Selland hit another jumper in the middle of the lane, which put her at 20 points with just over 16 minutes left in the game.

Rabb finished the second half strong, and her 16 points, including 4-5 from downtown, gave her a new career high Sunday afternoon.

Augustana finished the game shooting 36 of 72 from the field (50%), compared to just 16 of 65 (24.6%) for BSU. Augustana controlled the glass, finishing +23 on the glass.

Appachelli led the way for the Beavers in points and rebounds. She scored nine points and six rebounds in the loss.

The Viking now have a few days off before they take on Peru State (Neb.) on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at the Elmen Center. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
