SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – One final weekend in the regular season gives Augustana a chance to improve its position in the Northern Sun standings, and potentially put the Vikings in position for a home game in the first round of the NSIC?Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
Before the Vikings can turn their focus to the tournament though, they need to focus on a pair of road games this weekend, starting with Winona State on Friday at 8 p.m., and then Upper Iowa on Saturday at 6 p.m. Augustana split the first weekend with these teams at the Sioux Falls Arena, beating Upper Iowa, 86-69, on Jan. 19, before falling to Winona State, 84-80, on Jan. 20.
The Vikings enter the final weekend with a 9-11 conference record, the same as Wayne State, and neither team can move up in the rankings, as Sioux Falls enters the final weekend with a 12-8 NSIC?record. With Concordia-St. Paul guaranteed the No. 8 seed in the south at 4-16, Augustana can finish either fifth, sixth or seventh in the south, as Upper Iowa enters the final weekend of the regular season with an 8-12 record, and could pass both the Vikings and Wildcats with a sweep, and some help from Winona State.
Augustana hopes to bounce back from a pair of close losses in the final home weekend of the season, as the Vikings fell to Sioux Falls on?Friday by the score of 88-86, and then dropped another heartbreaker on Saturday against Southwest Minnesota State, 81-77.
No matter what happens over the weekend, the Vikings do know that they play a game on Wednesday.
