Baseball Sweeps Hawaii-Hilo in Season Opening Series

HILO, Hawaii - The Augustana baseball team (4-0) defeated Hawaii-Hilo, 12-6, on Saturday to sweep the season opening series.

Augustana season opening series sweep was the first such sweep for the Vikings since 2006. In 2006, the Vikings went to Goodwell, Okla. and took four from Oklahoma Panhandle State to open the season.

David Flattery made the most of his first appearance as a Viking. Flattery earned the win after going, a team-high for the weekend, five innings scattering four hits, one unearned run with three walks and six strikeouts.

Augustana got on the board first with a double steal in the first inning. Riley Johnson opened the game by getting on base via error and moved to third base on a stolen base and a wild pitch. After JT Mix walked, Mix would steal second and Johnson swiped home, giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, the Vikings would add another run when Jed Schmidt scored on a balk.

Augie tacked on another run in the fourth when Aiden Ladd doubled down the left field line, scoring Lucas Barry. The Vulcans picked up a run in the fifth scoring on a passed ball.

In the sixth, Augustana broke the game open scoring five runs with two-outs in the inning. Ryan Nickel came in as a pinch-hitter and scored the first RBI of the sixth with a single to center. Johnson would had a single in the next at bat and two batters latter Sam Baier doubled to left scoring two runs. The Vikings would tack on another four runs in the seventh inning to take a 12-1 lead.

The Vulcans put up five runs in the seventh inning, before Nick Hanson, Brody Curtiss and Michael Brandt shut the door, giving Augustana the 10-6 victory.

Johnson garnered multiple hits in each game of the series against Hawaii-Hilo and finished the series with a three-for-six performance with one RBI on Saturday. Johnson finished the weekend with 13 hits in 20 at bats.

Another Viking notable on the weekend was Sam Baier two-for-five with two RBI on Saturday and six-for-19 on the weekend with a team-high nine RBI.

Augustana will not play again until the end of February. The Vikings will take on Morningside in their home opener on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 3:30 p.m. at Karras Park in a single, nine inning game.
