SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The No. 12 Augustana baseball team improved to 11-0 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Morningside (6-9-1) at Karras Park on Thursday afternoon. The Vikings defeated the Mustangs in game one, 11-8, and in game two, 10-3.
GAME ONE: Augustana 11, Morningside 8
The Vikings used a big sixth inning to overcome the Mustangs and run their winning streak to 10. Down 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth when Augustana exploded for six runs in the frame, highlighted by
Sam Baier's three-run home run. The Mustangs would add two runs in the seventh, but the Vikings would hold on to win 11-8.
Jordan Barth paced the Vikings offensively after going three-for-four with two home runs, a double and two RBI. Barth now has the team lead with four home runs and extra base hits with seven.
Riley Johnson (three-for-four),
Ryan Menssen (two-for-three) and
Ryan Nickel (two-for-four) were the other Vikings with multi-hit games.
Morningside got the scoring started in the first with a single run, but the Vikings would answer with four runs in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. Barth got the scoring start with a solo shot to right field.
JT Mix gave the Vikings their first lead with a two-run RBI double and would later score on a
Michael Svozil sacrifice fly.
The Mustangs would counter with four runs in the top of the third to retake the lead. Barth would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning with his second solo home run of the game. The Mustangs would take the lead in the top of the sixth with a run, but the Vikings would take the lead for good with a six-run sixth.
GAME TWO: Augustana 10, Morningside 3
Augustana wasted little time getting a lead in game two and would not relinquish its lead in the 10-3 victory over Morningside. Augustana moved its winning streak to 11 in sweeping of the doubleheader against Morningside.
The Vikings jumped out to a 5-0 lead after batting around in the first inning.
Jordan Barth drove in the first run of the game on a RBI single and
Aiden Ladd would drive in another run on a fielder's choice.
Lucas Wylie would add a pair of RBI on a single to right and would later score on a double steal. Morningside picked up its only three runs in the third inning on a RBI single and a two-run home run.
Augustana added two runs in the third and three in the sixth to make the final score 10-3.
Nate Crossman recorded a two-RBI single in the third to score
Trent Herman and Ladd. In the sixth,
Sam Baier tripled in two runs and Ladd capped off the game with a RBI single.
Riley Johnson, Ladd and Wylie each recorded two hits and Baier, Ladd, Wylie and Crossman had two RBI apiece.
Brody Curtiss picked up his first collegiate win after going two innings in relief giving up no runs on two hits and one strikeout.
Augustana opens up its conference season with a neutral site series against Northern State. The Vikings and Wolves will play a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday, March 17 and Sunday March 18 in Omaha, Neb. with locations and times yet to be finalized.
