OMAHA, Neb. - The No. 12 Augustana baseball team (14-1, 3-1 NSIC) sweep the Sunday doubleheader against Northern State in Omaha, Neb. to take three out of four games in the series. The Vikings took game one, 4-2, and dominated game two, 10-0, behind a one-hit shutout from freshman
Jed Schmidt.
GAME ONE: Augustana 4, Northern State 2
Augustana used a home run from
Sam Baier and solid relief performances from
Derek Dahlke and
Michael Brandt.
The Wolves struck first with a pair of runs in the third inning, chasing Viking starter
Clay Collison after three innings. Making his first start as a Viking, Collision went three innings giving up two runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts. The Vikings would get a run back in the third on a
Michael Svozil two-out triple.
The Vikings took the lead in the fourth inning on Baier's two-run home run to left center field, giving Augustana a 3-2 lead. It was Baier's fourth homer of the season, tying
Jordan Barth's as team leader. Barth would add the last run of the game in the sixth, when he scored on a wild pitch.
Dahlke and Brandt each went two innings in relief allowing one hit apiece and striking out four batters. Dahlke (2-0) picked up his second win of the season and Brandt earned his second save.
GAME TWO: Augustana 10, Northern State 0
Augustana left little doubt in the final game of the series against Northern State with a complete performance. The offense put up 10 runs on 12 hits, the defense didn't commit an error and
Jed Schmidt threw a one-hit shutout.
Schmidt, a freshman from Mitchell, S.D., had a career game against the Wolves. Schmidt threw a career-high seven innings to pick up his first collegiate win. He gave up one hit with three walks and six strikeouts to stifle the Wolves hitters.
The Vikings would strike first in game two with a single run in the first inning.
Michael Svozil would double in the inning and would later score on a Northern State error. Augustana would put up a four spot in the third with a two-RBI double by
Jordan Barth, a sac fly by
Aiden Ladd and a RBI double by
Trent Herman.
Augustana would extend its lead to 10 after plating five in the fifth inning.
Nate Crossman got the scoring in the inning started with a pinch hit two-RBI double.
Riley Johnson tallied a RBI groundout and Crossman would score on an error by Northern State. The Vikings final run of the frame came on a Barth RBI single.
Baier was three-for-three at the plate with a runs scored and a walk to led the Vikings offense. Svozil and Barth also had multi-hit games with two apiece. Barth led the way with three RBI and Crossman also had two.
The Vikings will have a midweek non conference doubleheader against Winona State on Wednesday, March 21Â beginning at 2 p.m. at Karras Park.
