Baseball Notches 1000 Wins in Program History after Two Wins against Upper Iowa

DECORAH, Iowa - The No. 4 Augustana baseball (20-1, 7-1 NSIC) team keeps making history in 2018. After getting out to their best start and achieving their highest ranking in school history, the Augustana's two wins on Wednesday gave them 1000 wins in program history.

The Vikings defeated the Peacocks (7-8, 5-4 NSIC) 4-0 in game one and 13-3 in game two. For a program that got its start back in 1915, Augustana reached the 1000 win plateau with its game two win over Upper Iowa (from best records available).

GAME ONE: Augustana 4, Upper Iowa 0
Tyler Mitzel shined in his return to the mound as the Vikings shutout the Peacocks in game one, 4-0. Mitzel pitched for the first time since March 4 and only needed 74 pitches to go seven innings while allowing only four hits with no walks. Mitzel induced three double plays and had eight strikeouts on the afternoon. Mitzel moves to 3-0 on the season and lowers his ERA to 2.60.

Augustana got the offense going in the third inning with a Jordan Barth RBI double, scoring Riley Johnson. Barth would later score on a Ryan Nickel RBI single. In the fourth, Aiden Ladd would score on a Peacock error and in the seventh Sam Baier ripped RBI single into right field on a 3-0 count to conclude the scoring.

Underclassmen Johnson, Barth and Nickel each recorded multi-hit games with Johnson tallying three hits and Barth and Nickel with two.

GAME TWO: Augustana 13, Upper Iowa 3
After notching 12 hits in game one, the Augustana offense outdid itself in game two with 16 hits and 13 runs in a seven inning-run rule win over Upper Iowa 13-3. Seven of the nine Viking starters recorded two or more hits and three Vikings had multiple RBI.

Augustana jumped out early and never looked back with a six hit, four run first inning. Jordan Barth had a two-RBI double and Trent Herman followed with a two-RBI single for the Vikings to match their run total from game one. The Peacocks would score their first run of the day in the first inning on a Jacob Greco RBI single.

The Vikings would tally three runs apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to run past the Peacocks. Lucas Barry, Michael Svozil and Barth had RBI singles in the fourth. A Peacock throwing error scored the first run in the fifth and a Barry RBI single and a Johnson sacrifice fly gave the Vikings a 10-1 lead. Upper Iowa's Greco hit a two-run homer in the fifth to make the score 10-3.

In the sixth, Ryan Nickel recorded a RBI single and would come around to score on a fielder's choice. Sam Baier would score on a wild pitch to give the game a final score of 13-3 in seven innings.

Offensively, Barth and Barry had three RBI and Herman contributed two. Jed Schmidt (2-0) won his second game of the season after tossing five innings allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Jonas Lovin finished the game with two innings of relief giving up two hits and striking out five.

Augustana returns home for a doubleheader against Bemidji State on Thursday, March 29 and Friday, March 30 at Karras Park. Thursday's games begin at 3 p.m. and Friday's start at 12 p.m.
