ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The No. 13 ranked Augustana softball team started its final weekend of the regular season with a 3-0 win at St. Cloud State, but fell in the nightcap, 2-1.
The Vikings end the day with a 35-11 overall record and a 17-5 mark in the Northern Sun, while the Huskies enter their final homestand of the season on Sunday with a 33-16 record overall and a 19-9 record in the conference.
Up 1-0 in the second inning of the opener after
Kendall Cornick scored on a passed ball in the first, the Vikings got an RBI double from
Christina Pickett in the second that scored
Kaylea Schorr for a 2-0 Vikings lead.
Still 2-0 in the fifth, a pair of St. Cloud State miscues allowed Schorr to score the Vikings' third run of the game, and
Ashley Mickschl handled the rest. The freshman scattered four hits, with no walks and six strikeouts to improve to 15-5 on the season, with six shutouts.
Schorr delivered the Vikings lone run in the second inning of Game 2, a single that scored
Shannon Petersen for a 1-0 Augustana lead that lasted until the fourth inning, when the Huskies broke through with two runs on three hits.
Neither team scored from there, and a Schorr double to leadoff the fifth represented the Vikings lone hit over the final three frames.
The Vikings look to close out the regular season strong on Sunday, when they take on Minnesota Duluth in Duluth, Minn. Originally scheduled to start at noon, the doubleheader against the Bulldogs now starts at 1 p.m.
