Vikings and Marauders Split Late-Night Doubleheader

MINOT, N.D.  – Weather forced Augustana and U-Mary into a late-night doubleheader under the Air-Supported Dome in Minot, N.D., and despite the late hour, the teams played a pair of close contests, with the Vikings winning the 9 p.m. opener 5-4 in eight innings, and the Marauders taking the 11:40 p.m. nightcap 1-0 to earn the split.

The split leaves the Vikings at 25-7 overall and 7-1 in the NSIC, while the Marauders end the day with an 11-10 overall record, with a 2-6 conference mark.

Trailing 1-0 in the third with two outs and runners on the corners, the Vikings got on the board via a wild pitch, which scored Samantha Eisenreich to knot the game at 1-1. Abbie Lund came up next and drew a walk, then stole second, couple that with a throwing error, and Kendall Cornick scored for a 2-1 Vikings lead. Kylie Rome followed with an RBI single to score Lund, which put Augustana up 3-1.

An Eisenreich RBI on a fielder's choice in the fourth made it 4-1 Vikings, but the Marauders got two runs back in the bottom of the frame to cut the Augie lead to 4-3, and then tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth.

Still tied at four into the eighth inning, the Vikings capitalized on a pair of U-Mary miscues to score the game-winning run, and Ashley Mickschl pitched out of a jam in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.

Mickschl went the distance to improve to 10-3 on the season. She gave up four runs on seven hits, with eight strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Lexy Pederson took a perfect game into the sixth inning of the nightcap, but the Marauders broke through with one run on three hits in the same frame, and then held on in the top of the seventh for the 1-0 win with the tying run on second base.

Pederson struckout six and walked one in the loss, her first setback of the season, which drops her record to 9-1.

Kaylea Schorr, the defending NSIC and NFCA player of the week, recorded two of the Vikings five hits.

Augustana looks to get back in the win column on Saturday, when they take on Minot State under the Air-Supported Dome in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
