Augustana Volleyball Falls in Four to Winona State

The loss drops the vikings to 5-9 (0-6 NSIC)

BOX SCORE WINONA, Minn. --  Augustana Volleyball came into Friday night optimistic, but could not find a way to win against Winona State. The Vikings fell 3-1 in four sets (25-21, 25-22, 17-25, 25-18). The loss drops the Vikings to 5-9 (0-6 NSIC) on the year and moves Winona State to 5-9 (2-4 NSIC).

The first set was even until Winona pulled away 11-7 forcing an Augustana timeout. Winona extended their lead over the Vikings to 17-11. Augie rallied back to a score of 21-24 but the Warriors proved too much for the Vikings in the first set, winning 25-21.  

In the second set, the Vikings and Warriors traded points early, before Augustana pulled ahead 12-9 off a tandem block from Abby Benson and Payton Rosendahl. Augustana held the lead 20-16 before Winona went on a 4-0 run including three straight blocks. However, this didn't rattle the Vikings, who finished the set strong with a kill from Hanna Justesen sealing the victory for the Vikings 25-22.

The Vikings started set three strong by getting out to an early 5-1 lead off a kill from Avery Thorson. However, the Warriors didn't go easily and rallied back to tie the Vikings at 14. Winona State finished the set on an 11-3 run to defeat the Vikings 25-17.  

The fourth set was all Warriors as they gained an early 9-5 lead. The Vikings battled back but fell short 25-18, and dropped the match 3-1.

Overall, Augustana hit .110% to Winona State's .239%. The Warriors racked up 11 impactful blocks compared to the Vikings two. Leading the way for the Vikings was Courtney Place with 11 kills and 16 digs. Freshman Avery Thorson also finished with 32 assists.

Taylor Goar and Cori Meyers lead the Warriors with 14 and 13 kills respectively. Goar also picked up 13 digs throughout the night. The Warriors Bre Maloney picked up 46 assists.

The Vikings are back in action Saturday at 2 p.m., traveling to Fayette, Iowa to take on Upper Iowa.
