MARSHALL, Minn. -- Following a game of lead changes and runs, Friday's contest came down to the final seconds. Southwest Minnesota State's Jenna Borchers scored a three-pointer at the buzzer as No. 13 Augustana fell, 74-71. The Vikings snap a nine game win streak and drop to 14-2 (6-1 NSIC), while the Mustangs move to 6-6 (3-4 NSIC).
No. 23 Augustana returns to action Saturday action where they will square up with the University of Sioux Falls (9-4, 4-3 NSIC) at 4 p.m. at the Stewart Center.
Lynsey Prosser led the Vikings with a team-high 17 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.
Vishe' Rabb also added in 12 points and two rebounds. Augustana lost for the first time since Nov. 23rd, 2018.
Unlike most starts this season for the Vikings, the Mustangs gave them trouble early on. However, the Vikings settled in and eventually knocked down 3 of 7 from beyond the arc (43%).
Scoring during the first 10 minutes of action was spread evenly, but they were e led by NSIC South Player of the Week
Shelby Selland, who had five quick points. At the horn the Vikings trailed, 21-17.
The second quarter proved to be a defensive battle for both teams. The two teams traded buckets, but at the 5:00 mark, the Vikings pushed ahead 27-26 after a steal and layup by Prosser. Augustana's
Allie Walter scored inside on a nice move, but the Vikings headed into the locker room trailing by two buckets, 36-31. Overall, the Vikings shot 35.6% percent from the field (12 of 34) in the first half.
The full court pressure was tiring for both teams, but the Vikings withheld the Mustangs and forced 11 turnovers which led to 11 points. Prosser and Selland led the scoring column at the half with five a piece. To go along with her five points, Prosser snagged four rebounds of the Vikings 20 total rebounds.
Out of the half the third quarter started with an up and under move in the paint from
Camryn Hay. Prosser's 8th and 9th point followed moments later as she attacked the hoop and was fouled. The senior knocked down the free throws without hesitation.
A steal from
Hana Metoxen led to a transition bucket for
Abby Hora. On the play the junior was fouled and headed to the charity stripe where she knocked down both, making it a 55-52 game early in the 4th quarter.
SMSU answered with a run of their own and retook the lead, but Prosser once again stepped up. She drained a three and the Augustana crowd went nuts. The senior has 14 on the night, so far.
Bringing the game within 3 was Walter, she tallied her sixth points off of an assist from Prosser.
However, the Mustangs would prove to be too strong down the stretch. Jenna Borchers scored before the buzzer as Augustana lost for the first time since mid-November.
Augustana finished the game shooting 26 of 68 from the field (38.2%) while the Mustangs shot 28 of 69 (40.6%).
