SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Heavy winds and blowing snow weren't enough to stop the red-hot Augustana women's soccer team (8-1-1) as it defeated the Warriors of Winona State (4-6-0) 3-0 on Friday afternoon.
With the wind at their backs in the first half, the Vikings took advantage of the Warriors offensively. After Winona State took four quick shots on goal, Augustana controlled possession and cashed in on the game's first goal.
In the 29th minute, freshman forward
Josie Arduser sent a beautiful cross pass in front of the net that sophomore forward
Kenzie Geiger headed into the back of the net to give Augustana a 1-0 lead. The goal was Geiger's first of the season and ultimately proved to be the game-winner. Senior forward
Jensen Froehlich caught the secondary assist on the goal as well.
Just four minutes later, the Vikings tacked on an insurance goal when senior forward
Claire Dahm knocked the ball into the back of the net after a scramble out in front of it. Geiger assisted on Dahm's first goal of the season and finished with three points on the day.
Midway through the second half, Dahm scored her second goal of the game, and the season, after a
Jensen Froehlich shot ricocheted off of the Winona State goalkeeper. Dahm knocked the ball in to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Claudia Pueschner and the Vikingss' defense posted another strong effort with their sixth shutout in a row and seventh of the season. Senior defender
Morgan Moe played every single minute of the shutout while Pueschner faced 14 shots and made 10 saves.
Though the goal column read zero at the end of the day, the Warriors did challenge the Vikings a couple of times in the second half with some quality scoring opportunities With just over 20 minutes to go in the second half, a Winona State corner kick resulted in two quick shots and a scramble in front of the net that the Viking defenders shutdown. Just two minutes later Pueschner corralled a blistering free-kick from just outside the box.
Overall, the Vikings outshot the Warriors 17-10 and placed nine of their shots on goal.
