Viking Football to Celebrate Senior Day; Vie for Playoffs Saturday

11/12/2019 4:07:00 PM

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana football team celebrates Senior Day on Saturday while a victory (unofficially) places the Vikings in the postseason. Augustana enters Saturday's regular-season finale against Southwest Minnesota State as the No. 5 seed in Super Region Four, where seven teams qualify for the postseason.

The Game
Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. inside Kirkeby-Over Stadium where the Vikings are 5-0 in 2019. The stadium is celebrating its 10th anniversary while the Vikings are looking for their third unblemished record on the field.

A Vikings win, mixed with a loss by Minnesota State, would give Augie a share of the NSIC South Division Championship.

The Mustangs
Southwest Minnesota State is 3-7 on the season but has dropped three-straight games as the season winds down. The Mustangs have dropped contests to MSU Moorhead and Winona State at home before going to Concordia-St. Paul last week, falling 24-14.

The up-tempo offense sees Boyer Bouman throw for 245.2 yards per game, which is tops in the NSIC. His top receiver is Daniel Davis who ranks second in the nation with 8.7 receptions per game and an average of 116.6 yards per game. Both marks are tops in the NSIC. Running an average of 72 plays per game, SMSU slings the ball 37.2 times per game. On the ground, Max Simmons tallies 46.4 yards per game.

Defensively, Onte Burns leads the way with 100 tackles, 48 of which are solo. He has an interception, 5.5 tackles for loss and four pass breakups. Adihia Bell controls the defensive line with 3.0 sacks and 7.0 tackles for loss.

The Mustangs are one of 19 schools in the country to not have had a blocked kick this year.

The Vikings
Augustana is coming off a dramatic 26-25 win over Winona State last Saturday. The Vikings overcame three deficits in the contest and put together a game-winning drive of 8 plays, 70 yards to grab the lead with 41 seconds remaining. The touchdown came on a 30-yard pass from Zach Masoli and was thrown to Devon Jones. The score was Jones' second of the game.

For the season, Kyle Saddler leads the Vikings with 225 yards passing per game and has tossed for 13 touchdowns. His top targets include Sean Engel for 34 receptions and Nickel Meyers for 30 catches. Engel tallies 44.9 yards per game receiving while Jones leads the team with five receiving touchdowns. On the ground, Jarod Epperson paves the way with 75.6 yards rushing while Rudolh Sinflorant totals 53.6 yards per game.

T.J. Liggett continues to lead the defense with 72 tackles, 50 of which are solo. Kenneth Griffin and Eli Weber lead the team with four interceptions each, while the Vikings rank seventh nationally with 17 interceptions.

Who to Watch For
Sophomore kicker Luis Guarita is one field goal shy of tying the school record of 16 made field goals in a season. Drew Behrens set the current record in 2010 when he went 16-of-27 for the year. Guarita is 15-of-17 this season, ranking sixth nationally with a field goal percentage of 88.2 and eighth nationally with 1.5 field goals per game.

One Last Thing
Augustana's senior class is on the verge of tying last year's class as the third-winningest class in program history with 28 wins. The 15 seniors enter Saturday with 27 wins under their belts.
