Viking Volleyball Clinches NSIC Tournament Berth With 3-1 Win Over MSU Moorhead

Augustana honored Sophia Terwilleger and Jessica Simon on Senior Night

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana volleyball team secured the seventh seed in the NSIC Tournament with a 3-1 victory over MSU Moorhead on Senior Night inside the Elmen Center. The Vikings face the No. 2 seed Minnesota Duluth in the first round of the NSIC Tournament on Friday at noon inside the Sanford Pentagon.

With the win, the Vikings finish the regular season 20-9 and 13-7 in the NSIC while the Dragons end their season 9-19 and 4-16 in the NSIC. Augustana finished the regular season winning nine of its last 11 matches including a seven-match win streak with two wins over ranked opponents.

The Vikings jumped on the Dragons on senior night taking an early 5-1 lead in the first set. Augie used a 4-1 run to build a 9-4 lead and later a 15-7 lead. Augustana used another run to take a commanding 22-10 lead capped off by a Maddy Guetter slammer. Back-to-back kills from Kate Reimann and Payton Rosendahl gave Augie the 25-13 first set win.

The Dragons used a hot start in the second set to build a 4-1 lead early on but the Vikings tied things up with kills from Guetter and Abby Benson. Both teams traded points back-and-forth until MSUM used a short run to take a 14-11 lead and later a 16-12 lead. The Dragons held their largest lead of the night at 20-13 after a Grace Haberland service ace, but the Vikings reeled off a 8-1 run to tie things up at 21-all.

After a Layla Sanati-Zaker kill gave the Dragons the edge at 22-21, Augie finished the second set on a 4-1 run capping off the seven-point comeback for the 2-0 lead.

The third set was the most competitive of the night as the largest lead in the opening moments was one. MSUM broke that making it 9-7 and later 13-9 after a Viking attacking error. Augustana used a clutch 3-0 run to tie things up at 19-19 late in the set and used another hot streak to jump out to a 23-21.

The Dragons made sure they didn't go out without a fight as they scored three points to take a 24-23 set-point lead and a 26-25 set-point lead. Augie fought back to tie things up at 26 with a Benson kill but back-to-back kills from the MSU Moorhead gave the Dragons the 28-26 third set win.

Determined to extinguish any fire the Dragons were breathing in the third set, the Vikings jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and later a 8-4 lead off a Rosendahl kill. Augie then continued to pour it on going on a 6-0 run making the score 14-5 in favor of the home team. The Vikings made the score 18-7 after another Rosendahl kill and would take the 25-16 set four victory.

Senior Jessica Simon recorded a career-high 33 assists to lead both teams on the night and also picked up eight digs and three kills on Senior Night. Avery Thorson moved two assists away from 2,000 career assists with 22 on the night. She now has 1,998 career assists after going over 1,000 assists in a single season against Northern State on Friday night.

Guetter and Benson led the charge offensively with 13 kills and 11 kills while Rosendahl chipped in with 10 kills. Erika Bute led both teams with 24 digs on the night while Izzy Sommers sent back a match-high three blocks.

As a team, the Vikings recorded 64 kills and 61 assists while getting 72 digs and four blocks on the defense.

Quotable
"It was a great win tonight," head coach Jennifer Jacobs said. "I am really proud of the things our team has done near the end of this conference season. We aren't done yet though as we are looking forward to postseason play!"
