Women’s Basketball Opens Its Season With 83-62 Win Over Truman State

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — The Augustana women's basketball team picked up its eighth-straight season-opening victory with an 83-62 win over Truman State on Saturday morning in Kirksville, Missouri.

With the win, the Vikings move to 1-0 while Truman State falls to 2-1 on the season. The win also gives head coach Dave Krauth his 27th season-opening win.

Augustana had five players score in double-digits and dominated the entire game while getting 26 points off the bench.

Augustana used a fast start to jump out to a 9-4 lead but Truman State fought back to tie it up at 12 all early in the first quarter. The Bulldogs and the Vikings kept it close until Augie used an 8-3 run to end the first quarter to take a 23-16 lead into the second quarter.

In the second stanza, the Vikings extended their lead to 27-19 but the Bulldogs fought back to cut the lead to 32-29. An Aislinn Duffy long ball and an Abby Hora jumper brought the lead to 37-29. Janelle Shiffler used a hot shooting streak to help the Vikings build a 45-36 halftime lead. The sophomore had 9 of the 17 bench points for Augustana in the first half.

The third quarter was all Vikings as they led by as many as 20 points. Kathy Klucking converted an and-one cutting the lead to 49-41 creating a little momentum for the Bulldogs. However, that momentum didn't last very long as Augie reeled off a 12-2 run to open up its largest lead of the night thus far at 61-42. Augustana continued its defensive pressure to force six turnovers in the quarter and cashed in on 11 points off those turnovers.

Augustana cooled off in the fourth quarter as they shot 38 percent and only outscored the Bulldogs 18-17 in the final frame after outscoring them 20-9 in the third quarter.

Lauren Sees shined in her Viking debut as the freshman recorded 12 points on 57 percent shooting. Vishe' Rabb led all scorers with 15 points on 55 percent shooting in 19 minutes. Abby Hora chipped in with 14 points while Camryn Hay and Shiffler finished with 10 and 11 points.

Lizzy Karp and Duffy recorded their first points of their Viking careers as Karp finished with three points while Duffy finished with seven points.

As a team, the Vikings shot 42.5 percent (31-of-73) and went 72.2 percent from the line (13-of-18). Augustana had an 8-4 margin on fastbreak points and a 14-5 margin in points off turnovers after forcing 13 turnovers.

Augie held the Bulldogs to 16 percent shooting from deep (3-of-18) while limiting TSU to 24-of-61 shooting from the field. The Vikings held the Bulldogs to 3-of-12 shooting from the field in the third quarter.
