Augustana Women’s Basketball Falls to Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. -- The Augustana women's basketball team fell to Wayne State in its NSIC opener, 80-76, on Saturday afternoon inside Rice Auditorium in Wayne, Nebraska.

The Vikings fall to 4-1, 0-1 NSIC while the Wildcats improve to 5-1, 1-0 NSIC.

After a slow start to the game, the Vikings used a 10-3 run to take a 10-7 lead early on in the first quarter. A pair of Wayne State free throws cut the lead to 10-8 before the Vikings used an 8-4 run to extend their lead to 18-11 and would take an 18-13 lead into the second quarter.

Both teams traded baskets on their first possessions of the second quarter making the lead 20-16 in favor of the Vikings. Wayne State climbed back into the game with a 6-2 run to tie things up at 27-all with 3:32 remaining until halftime. A pair of free throws from Vishe' Rabb gave the Vikings a 32-29 lead but a layup from Erin Norling made the score 32-31 and a Wildcat free throw tied things up at 32-all heading into halftime.

Both teams traded points to open the third quarter as neither team could get more than a two-point lead for the first five minutes of the second quarter. WSC finally broke that with back-to-back layups from Kylie Hammer and Norling to take a 46-43 lead with 4:52 left in the quarter.

The Vikings were able to get a defensive stop to take back the lead at 47-46 after an Abby Hora jumper. Wayne State would take over the rest of the quarter as they went on a 15-8 run to take a 63-55 lead into the final stanza.

Augustana struck first in the final quarter with a pair of free throws from Hana Metoxen that cut the lead to 63-56. The Wildcats led by seven at 66-59 before Augie used a 7-4 run capped off by an Izzy Van Veldhuizen 3-pointer to make the score 68-66. Rabb followed up a Hammer 3-pointer with a jumper in the paint to make the score 73-70.

Augustana had the ball with 12 seconds left with the score at 76-74 with the chance to tie the game up late. Rabb took a drive on the left side but was called for an offensive foul giving the ball back to the Wildcats. After the Wildcats made a pair from the charity stripe, Metoxen was fouled after making a layup to give the Vikings a chance to make it 78-77 but Metoxen would miss the free throw. The Wildcats hit two free throws from the line to close the game out.

Augustana was led by Rabb with 17 while Hora and Lauren Sees finished with 12 and 10, respectively. Metoxen finished with six boards, three assists and four steals on the afternoon.
