Augustana Soccer Closes Out Regular Season On Friday Against Wayne State

11/6/2019 6:26:00 PM

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Augustana women's soccer team (13-3-1) plays its last regular season game on Friday at 3 p.m. at Morstad Field against the Wildcats of Wayne State (6-7-4).

The Game
The result of Augustana's match with Wayne State has huge NSIC Tournament implications. The Vikings could potentially clinch a share of the NSIC Championship while the Wildcats are fighting to get into the tournament. Augustana is currently the three seed, while Wayne State is the eight seed.

The Vikings could finish as high as the two seed or as low as the four seed. If Augustana defeats Wayne State and Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul tie, Augustana would hold a share of the regular-season NSIC Championship and would be the two seed. If the Vikings win and Minnesota State wins, the Vikings would still be the two seed, but the regular-season title would go to Minnesota State. With a loss, the Vikings would fall to the three or four seed, depending on the outcome of Bemidji State's matchup with Minnesota Crookston.

The Wildcats
The Wildcats come into their matchup with Augustana at 6-7-4 after falling to Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State last weekend. Wayne State is 6-6-2 in NSIC play and 3-3-3 on the road. Senior Sophia Ketchmark leads the Wildcats with two goals, three assists and seven points on the season. Senior goalkeeper Rachel Grisham has started all 17 games and has posted six shutouts.

The Vikings
Augustana has dictated the terms of play during the course of the regular season and has dominated in every offensive category. The Vikings have outscored their opponents 36-15, outshot them 329-216 and have placed 176 shots on goal while only allowing 112. The Vikings are averaging 2.12 goals per game, 19.4 shots per game and 10.4 shots on goal per game.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Vikings have posted 10 shutouts while only allowing 0.88 goals per match. Sophomore goalkeeper Claudia Pueschner is currently fourth in the NSIC in save percentage and is perfect on stopping penalty kicks this season. Pueschner was also named NSIC Goalkeeper of the week in back-to-back weeks earlier this season.

Morgan Moe has also helped anchor the Viking defense and has played in 1,549 minutes of the 1,566 minutes this season. Moe was also named NSIC Defender of the Week twice this season.

Player to Watch
Sophomore forward Alexis Legg was named the Viking Preseason Player to Watch and has been heating up, especially of late. After being held off the scoresheet in the first eight games, Legg has scored tallied nine points in the last nine games, including goals in four of the last seven.

One Last Thing
Last Sunday, the Vikings made sure that this matchup would not be the last home game of the season, by clinching a home contest in the NSIC Tournament with their win against No. 15 Concordia-St. Paul. The Vikings will play their first round matchup of the NSIC Tournament at Morstad Field at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
