Viking Volleyball Takes Care of Business in Bismarck

BISMARCK, N.D. — The Augustana volleyball team defeated UMary 3-0 Friday night in Bismarck, North Dakota. With the win, the Vikings move to 18-8 and 11-6 in the NSIC while the Marauders fall to 1-25 and 0-17 in the NSIC. Augustana extends its win streak to six with the win. 

In the first set, both teams traded points back-and-forth until the Vikings gained momentum taking a 7-4 lead. Augustana used a 9-2 run early to take a commanding 17-8 lead and finished the first set on a 5-0 run capped off by an Izzy Sommers hammer. 

In the second stanza, the Vikings bolted out to a 7-3 lead but the Marauders fought back to tie things up at 8-8 and once again at 12-12. Both teams traded points during the middle of the set until Augie made a quick 3-0 run to take a 21-17 lead and later took the 25-20 set two win. 

The Vikings used a series of runs in the third set to take control early on. Maddy Guetter used one of her team-high nine kills to give Augustana a 11-7 lead and Payton Rosendahl capped off a 4-0 run to give the Vikings a 14-7 lead. 

With the score 18-14 Augie, the Vikings went a 4-0 run to take a 22-14 lead and back-to-back kills from Rosendahl and Sommers gave Augustana the 25-17 set three victory and the match win. 

Avery Thorson finished with a team-high 31 assists and 13 digs to record her eighth double-double of the season. Rosendahl chipped in with seven kills and recorded five digs while Maddy Guetter had a team-high nine kills. Defensively, Grace Haberland had 11 digs and Guetter and Sommers finished with two blocks. 

As a team, the Vikings finished with 42 kills, nine aces and 36 assists. Defensively, Augustana had 55 digs and four blocks on the night.

The Vikings will finish up action in North Dakota when they travel to Minot, North Dakota, on Saturday at 2 p.m.
