BOONE, Iowa -- The No. 20 Augustana baseball team (25-11, 18-4 NSIC) split a doubleheader on Sunday to cap off a three-game series against Concordia St. Paul (18-17, 9-14 NSIC), dropping the first game 1-0, and coming away with a 7-1 victory in the series finale.
Game One
In game one, the Vikings were led by a pitching performance from freshman
Seth Miller, who pitched six innings with four strikeouts, two walks, and zero earned runs. Concordia St. Paul scored the lone run of the game in the first inning after an error kept the inning alive.
Augustana struggled to get the bats going in the first game of the day as only two Viking batters recorded hits. However, the Vikings were not ineffective reaching base as they worked their way to six walks.
The Golden Bears were able to hold off any Viking charges during game one and came away with a 1-0 win.
Game Two
The second game of the doubleheader saw the Vikings snatch the lead early on by taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning on a sacrifice fly by
Ryan Nickel that scored
Michael Svozil. Augustana resumed the scoring in the third inning with a
Will Olson RBI single through the right side and a sacrifice bunt by
Sam Baier that scored
Riley Johnson.
JT Mix knocked in an RBI in the fourth inning on a single to right center and Miller drove in Nickel on a sacrifice fly in the fifth to give the Vikings a 5-0 lead. Concordia St. Paul scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but would not score again for the remainder of the game.
Baier scored in the seventh inning by advancing on a wild pitch to stretch the lead back to five. In the top of the ninth,
Bjorn Hanson ripped a single up the middle that scored Baier again.
On the mound,
Thomas Bruss earned his fifth win of the season after pitching 2.1 innings of relief with four strikeouts and just one earned run.
Jed Schmidt took his first save of the season while pitching four innings with no earned runs allowed and four strikeouts.
Next Up
The Vikings return to action on Tuesday as they return to Sioux Falls for a mid-week doubleheader with Sioux Falls at Sioux Falls Stadium starting at 4:00 PM.
