SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana baseball team (20-7, 13-1 NSIC) stretched their win streak to five games on Wednesday defeating Southwest Minnesota State (5-15, 4-11 NSIC) 7-1 and 15-5 on a rainy evening at Karras Park, the home of Ronken Field.
Game One
The Vikings won game one using power hitting, with
Will Olson and
Jordan Barth each hitting home runs to account for five Augustana runs.Â
Augustana got on the board with two runs in the first inning on a couple of errors by the SMSU infielders. Barth had the lone RBI of the inning on a groundout.Â
Olson's home run came in the sixth inning with two runners on base as the ball barely cleared the right field fence. Barth's homer traveled to left field with one runner on and easily cleared the fence to stretch the Viking lead to 7-1.Â
Evan Furst got the start for the Vikings on the mound as he pitched a four-hit, one earned run complete game. The sophomore has appeared three times in the last 10 games and posted a 1.15 ERA during that stretch with 15.2 innings pitched.Â
Game Two
The Mustang bats woke up in game two as they put up five runs, but Augustana outscored SMSU with 15 runs of their own. Barth and Olson both recorded their second home runs of the day during the game and drove in four runs apiece.
Riley Johnson extended his hitting streak to 22 games.
Jed Schmidt got the win for Augustana as he pitched two innings in relief with one earned run surrendered. Schmidt is now 3-1 on the season after his five strikeout performance against the Mustangs.Â
