Augustana Slugs Their Way to Win in Super Regional

Vikings are one win away from the Women’s College World Series

EDMOND, Okla. -- Taking the diamond in game one of the NCAA DII Super Regionals, the No. 15 Augustana softball team showed off their bats, slugging their way to a 13-5 (5 inn.) win over No. 1 Central Oklahoma. The Vikings are now one win away from their first Women's College World Series berth since 2012.

The Vikings and Bronchos now play game two of Super Regionals, set for Friday at 4 p.m. If the Vikings drop game two, there will be a winner-take-all game, starting 30 minutes after game two.

The Vikings (55-10) received contributions up and down their lineup, but it was the play of senior Maggie Kadrlik that set the tone from the start. Kadrlik crushed a three-run home run in her first at-bat, hit a solo home run in her second, and finished the day 4-4 with a single-game program record six RBI.

Moments that mattered:
  • Maggie Kadrlik started off the scoring with a three-run home run in the top of the first. Kadrlik went on to finish the game 4-4 with two home runs.
  • Ashley Mickschl pitched a complete-game six-hitter with four strikeouts. Mickschl also had two hits and two RBI.
  • Eight Vikings recorded a hit and seven student-athletes had an RBI. Augustana finished with 16 hits, which is two away from their season high.
  • Kendall Cornick finished 3-4 with an RBI and a game-high three runs scored.
  • Shannon Petersen and Kara McDougall both had two hits for the Vikings.
  • Samantha Eisenreich had one RBI and three walks.
  • Augustana set two single-season program records, including doubles (116) and home runs (83).

The Vikings started off the super regionals in style, pouring in four runs in the first frame. Following singles from Mickschl and Cornick, Kadrlik stepped in and blasted a three-run home run to straight-away center, clearing 220 feet.

Now leading 3-0, fellow senior Samantha Eisenreich's connected on an RBI double to right-center, which scored Petersen from first. By the end of the inning, bases-loaded walks from Mary Pardo and Mickschl made it a 6-0 game. The Vikings batted around in the top of the first, with 11 student-athletes coming to the plate.

Central Oklahoma got four runs back in the first, but Vikings offense flexed again in the second. With Kadrlik leading off, she drilled the first pitch she saw to left center. McDougall added a two-out RBI single, and Augustana had re-built their lead to 8-4.

Mickschl settled in to allow just one run over the final four innings, collecting three more strikeouts. The sophomore improved to 26-5 this season with 20 complete games.

Petersen added an RBI double in the third, making it 9-5. The Vikings put the game on ice in the fourth inning. Three consecutive RBI singles from Mickschl, Cornick, and Kadrlik pushed the Vikings lead to eight runs. In their final at-bats of the day, UCO went down with 1-2-3 in the fifth.

The Vikings and Bronchos now play game two of Super Regionals, set for Friday at 4 p.m. If the Vikings drop game two, there will be a winner-take-all game, starting 30 minutes after game two.
