KINGSVILLE, Texas -- The Augustana women's volleyball program finished its second day of action in Texas going 2-0, bringing its overall record to 7-1 on the season. The Vikings ended with a 4-0 record during the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina Volleyball Tournament.

St. Edward's
The Vikings got off to a slow start on day two losing the first set to St. Edward's but would quickly bounce back and win the next three sets to earn the 21-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-19 victory.

In the second set, Augie and the Hilltoppers traded points back and forth with no one really being able to pull away early on. The Vikings went up 15-10 and took advantage of a late 10-4 run to tie things up at one a-piece.

The third set was all Augustana as they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead which forced a St. Edward's timeout hoping to quiet the momentum. Unfortunately for the Hilltoppers, that tactic didn't work as the Vikings would reel off eight more points to bring the lead to 12-3.

After being stuck on set point for longer than the Vikings would like, a service error by St. Edward's gave Augustana the third set.

In the fourth set, the Vikings started off hot leading as many as 10 at 15-5 before having to fight off a late rally by the Hilltoppers to come away with the 25-19 win.

Augustana finished with 51 kills on a .221 hitting percentage. The Vikings tallied 47 assists and 81 digs in the match.

Freshman Maddy Guetter tied her career-high with 13 kills while Abby Benson also tied her career-high of 10 kills. Freshman Erika Bute led both teams with 21 digs. Guetter has now hit the double-digit mark with kills in five of the seven matches this season.

Sophomore Avery Thorson recorded another double-double with 14 digs, 37 assists and also tacked on six kills. Sophomore Izzy Simmers finished with 10 kills and an attacking percentage of .318.

St. Mary's
The Vikings came into the matchup with the Rattlers with a 6-1 record and 3-0 record at the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina Volleyball Tournament and left with a 3-0 sweep. Augustana recorded its third shutout of the season with the 25-18, 25-18, 25-12 win.

Augustana started out slow but as the first set went along the Vikings gathered momentum and took a 14-7 lead midway through the set. Back-to-back kills from Thorson and junior Payton Rosendahl helped Augustana close out the things in the first set 25-18.
The second set was somewhat similar to the first with Augie jumping out an early 8-3 lead before making a run towards the middle of the set. The Vikings led by as many as 10, 21-11, before St. Mary's fought back to make the score 23-17 but eventually, the Vikings earned the 25-18 win on a Guetter kill to keep the shutout alive.

In the third set, Augustana didn't give St. Mary's any chance to mount any momentum as it exploded for a 7-1 lead forcing a Rattler's timeout. With the score 19-11, the Vikings closed on a 6-1 run to earn the shutout and the undefeated record in Texas.

Augie used 47 kills and a .361 attacking percentage to get the win. Augustana also tacked on six aces, eight blocks, 42 assists and 56 digs in the win.

Guetter added on another double-digit kill performance with 13 kills. She now has double-digit kills in six of the eight matches. Benson finished with six kills, six blocks and a .429 hitting percentage.

Thorson was two digs short of adding another double-double performance to her belt after recording 36 assists and eight digs. Sommers and Grace Haberland both finished with nine kills. Bute again led both teams with 23 digs on the night.

The Vikings move to 3-1 on Saturdays and now have a record of 3-1 in three sets and 4-0 in four-set matches this season.

Quotable
"It was a great 4-0 tournament this weekend for our team," head coach Jennifer Jacobs said. "We saw some growth from last weekend and are now ready to start conference play!"
