MANKATO, Minn. – The Augustana women's basketball team ended up on the wrong side of 12 lead changes and six ties as the Vikings had their five-game win streak snapped 61-60 at Minnesota State Saturday afternoon.
Augustana falls to 11-7 overall and 7-7 in NSIC action. It is the first setback since falling in early January. Minnesota State improves to 11-7 and 8-6.
The Vikings came out of the first quarter leading 22-18 amid a flurry of lead changes but had an uncharacteristic second quarter, allowing 15 points and scoring just eight, to enter halftime trailing 33-30.
The Vikings fell behind by six points in the early portion of the third quarter but fought back to pull within a single digit at 42-41 on an
Aislinn Duffy 3-point basket. However, the Mavericks answered back with a trey of their own and entered the final period leading 46-43.
Augustana grabbed its first lead of the second half with 6:02 remaining in the fourth quarter on a jumper from
Hannah Mitby. The back-and-forth again ensued as the squads either tied or traded the lead eight times over the remainder of the game. The Vikings took a 60-59 lead after
Abby Hora stole a bad pass and scored on a fastbreak layup with 1:14 on the clock.
Neither team would score again until Joey Batt made a layup with seven seconds remaining which proved to be the game-winner for Minnesota State.
Duffy tallied 13 points for the Vikings and neared a double-double with eight rebounds, both game highs. Mitby totaled 12 points while
McKenzee Zilverberg added 10 points. Augustana recorded 13 steals including a game-high three from Hora.
Augustana will look to restart a winning streak on Friday hosting Minot State inside the Sanford Pentagon. On Saturday, the Vikings host UMary. Friday's game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. tip while Saturday's game will begin at 3:30 p.m.
