WINTER HAVEN, FL -- The long ball continues to fly for No. 1 Augustana softball. Taking the field on day four at the 2020 Spring Games, Augustana hit a pair home runs and stole 11 bases on its way to two wins on Tuesday afternoon. The Vikings opened the day with a 9-1 (5 inning) win over Truman State and followed up with a 6-0 win over Lake Erie.
Augustana continued to receive strong pitching performances as well.
Ashley Mickschl pitched a one-hit, four-strikeout, four inning gem, and
Amber Elliott allowed just one-hit en route to a seven-inning complete game effort. The Vikings, who hit two more home runs on Tuesday, have now clubbed 13 homers in the last seven games.
Game One
Augustana's offense went right to work in the top of the first inning. Freshman phenom
Torri Chute continued her outstanding start, crushing a three-run home run in the top of the first. After hitting her first-career home run on Saturday, the Minnesota native now has four-straight games with a long shot. Chute and
Mary Pardo are tied with four home runs to lead the team.
Chutte continued to roll in the second, collecting two more RBI on a line drive double to right center.
Kendall Cornick and Pardo both came in to score, making it 5-0 in the second.
Mickschl was impressive from the games first pitch, striking out three batters in the first two innings. The junior finished with four innings pitched, four strikeouts, and just one hit allowed.
Christina Pickett added to the advantage in the fourth, connecting on an RBI double to right center. Pickett also surpassed 100 career RBI on Tuesday afternoon.
Now leading 7-0,
Olivia Hazelbaker collected an RBI on a fielder's choice, scoring Chute from third. Moments later,
Abbie Lund reached on an error, scoring Pickett, and making it a 9-0 game.
Christina Pickett took the circle in the fifth inning, making her collegiate pitching debut. Pickett battled through a walk and error and pitched well enough to record the games final three outs.
Game Two
Augustana continued to roll in game two, sparked by the long ball. Scoreless in the third,
Kendall Cornick sent a no-doubt shot over the right field fence to make it 2-0.
Amber Elliott took the circle for the Vikings in game two and had the storm off balance early on. The junior kept Lake Erie hitless through three innings of work.
Elliott went on to pitch a complete-game performance, striking out three in seven innings of work. Elliott now has back-to-back complete game shutouts for the Vikings. In the last two games, the Junior has 14 innings pitching, 16 strikeouts, and zero earned runs.
Abbie Lund added an RBI single in the fourth to make it a 3-0 game, and following a double steal, Augustana had built a 4-0 advantage. The Vikings, who stole five bases in game one, swiped a season-high six bags in game two.
In the sixth, back-to-back RBI singles from Pardo and Cornick made it a 6-0 Augustana lead. Cornick finished with two hits and game-high three RBI for the Vikings. Mickschl also had two hits for Augustana in game two.
