Augustana Women’s Basketball Hands CSP First Loss of Season

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augustana women's basketball team bounced back from Friday's loss at Concordia-St. Paul with a Saturday afternoon win. The Vikings move to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the loop after defeating the Golden Bears 80-70. The Vikings also handed the Golden Bears their first loss of the season, moving them to 5-1 and 3-1 in conference play.

Although both teams made just four field goals in the first quarter, Augustana was able to take  advantage of the Golden Bears foul trouble. The Vikings were a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line, giving them the advantage.

Sophomore Aislinn Duffy had six of the Vikings 18 first quarter points while also grabbing four boards, giving AU an eight-point lead going into the second quarter.

Sophomore Lauren Sees contributed four points in the second quarter, while junior Vishe' Rabb and sophomore Kenzie Rensch also found the bottom of the net.

Augustana led 26-23 going into the second half.

The shooting woes for both squads went away in the second half.

Augustana made seven field goals, shooting 41.2 percent in the third, while Concordia-St. Paul found its way to the charity stripe, making 13-of-16 free throws in the quarter.

Augies's biggest lead was at the 3:36 mark in the third when a jumper by Rabb made the score 43-33 in favor of the Vikings.

Augustana had a hot-shooting fourth quarter making 56 percent of its shot attempts.

Senior Izzy Van Veldhuizen went off in the fourth quarter and registered all 15 of her points in the last ten minutes of the game.

Joining Van Veldhuizen in double-digit scoring was Duffy and Sees with 16 a piece. Three Vikings grabbed eight rebounds in Van Veldhuizen, Duffy and freshman Jennifer Aadland.

The Golden Bears were led by Riley Wheatcraft who scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

The Vikings return to the road for a weekend of games against Winona State. Friday's game against the Warriors is slated for 6 p.m. while Saturday's is scheduled for 2 p.m.
