FAYETTE, Iowa – The Augustana men's basketball team fell 114-109 to Upper Iowa in overtime Saturday afternoon. It marked the second-straight season the Vikings and Peacocks went to overtime in Fayette, Iowa.
Augustana (5-5, 3-5 NSIC) had a strong night shooting, tallying a 49.4 percent shooting percentage but saw Upper Iowa (5-5, 3-3 NSIC) shoot 53.5 percent from the field including 50 percent from 3-point range.
Tyler Riemersma tallied his fifth double-double of the season with a 15-point, 15-rebound effort while
Isaac Fink led the way scoring with 25 points.
Matt Todd also reached the 20-point plateau with 21 points as
Dylan LeBrun totaled 19 and
Adam Dykman 10.
The first half saw 12 lead changes and five ties but UIU snuck into the locker room holding a 55-47 lead. Coming out of the break, Augustana went on a 10-1 run and took a 59-58 lead with 15:44 remaining on a Riemersma layup.
The lead grew to five points on a
Matt Todd 3-point basket. However, Upper Iowa came fighting back and knotted things up at 64, a sign of things to come as there was no separation gained throughout the half as the two teams ended regulation tied at 96.
In the extra period, Augustana led for 2:30 of the additional five minutes but saw Upper Iowa take the lead on a 3-point basket from Joe Smoldt with 38 seconds on the clock, giving the Peacocks a 109-106 lead.
That lead stretched to seven points before the final score of 114-109.
Upper Iowa saw three players reach 20 points led by Smoldt with 26 points.
The Vikings return to the Sanford Pentagon on Friday and Saturday, hosting Southwest Minnesota State. Friday's game is at 7 p.m. while Saturday will tip-off at 3 p.m.
