Men’s Hoops Begin NSIC Action at Minnesota State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana men's basketball completes a four-game road trip to open the season at Minnesota State Friday and Saturday. The 14th ranked Vikings will tip-off against the Mavericks at 6 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday. Fans are not allowed at the contest in Mankato. The contests are marked as the first conference games of the season.
 
About the Vikings
Augustana is 2-0 for the second-straight season and fourth time in the past five years after sweeping the opening weekend of competition at MSU Moorhead. Michael Schaefer led the team in scoring with 21.5 points per game while Tyler Riemersma earned the NSIC South Division Player of the Week honors after putting up numbers of 18 points and 8.5 rebounds over the two victories.
 
In the season-opening 74-69 win, Schaefer tallied a game-high 20 points while Matt Todd also hit 20 points. Todd also dished four assists and recorded two steals while hitting eight free throw attempts. In the 89-79 victory to complete the sweep, Schaefer increased to 23 points while Isaac Fink made his first start of the season and poured in 20 points. Riemersma recorded a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Augustana split with Minnesota State in 2019-20 with each team winning on its home floor. MSU prevailed 89-77 in Mankato with the Vikings winning 73-66 inside the Sanford Pentagon. In the win, Fink tallied 22 points while Todd scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished three assists.
 
About the Mavericks
Minnesota State enters the second weekend of action holding a 1-1 record. On the season's opening night, the Mavericks fell 79-54 to Bemidji State before bouncing back on Sunday with a 91-67 victory.
 
Quincy Anderson led Minnesota State in both contests including a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds in Sunday's contest. In Saturday's loss, he tallied 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting.
 
Minnesota State was tabbed fourth in the Preseason NSIC Coaches' Poll with 31 points. Kelby Kramer was selected as the Player to Watch after tallying seven double-doubles last season. He averaged 10 points and four rebounds over the season's first two games.

One Last Thing
Junior Michael Schaefer has back-to-back 20-point games for the third time in his career. He tallied 20 points in the Vikings' season opener and bounced back with 23 points the following day. Both were game highs while his 21.5 points per game average rank fifth in the NSIC.
