WAYNE, Neb.-- Augustana soccer claimed its tenth-straight victory with a shutout win over the Wayne State Wildcats Friday. The ten-straight wins break a program record for the most consecutive wins as Augustana closes the regular season with a 13-3-2 overall record and 12-1-2 mark in NSIC action.Wayne State falls to 6-8-4 overall and 6-6-3 in NSIC play.Â
Senior Alexis Legg netted the first goal of the game in the third minute of the contest. Senior Carlie Kray picked up the assist on the goal. Kray beat the Wayne State defender at the top of the penalty box and sent the ball to Legg from the left. Legg's one-touch from Kray to the lower-left corner of the net beat the goalkeeper and put the Vikings ahead early.
Legg has recorded 12 goals in the 2021 fall season, sliding into the fifth spot for the most number of goals in a season for Augustana. Legg previously held the fifth position with 11 goals in 2018.
The Vikings increased the lead over the Wildcats in the 24th minute of play with a goal by junior Josie Arduser. The goal was assisted by senior Morgan Keirstead after Keirstead pushed through three defenders and sent the ball back to Arduser in the midfield. The shotÂ
beat the goalkeeper and deflected off the crossbar into the net.
"I felt great about our performance today," Augustana head coach Brandon Barkus said. "We started the game really strong, scored two goals and our possession was just very very solid! We moved the ball with great accuracy and execution.
"Bailey McCullough was tremendous in our midfield and really facilitated our possession. We still need to improve on picking our moments to penetrate, but overall just a really solid game for our team!"
Augustana tallied nine shots with six being on target. Wayne State recorded four shots on goal and five total in the match.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jillian Barkus earned her tenth shutout of the season with Friday's victory. Barkus made four saves in 90 minutes of play.
"I am excited about how we are playing going into the postseason, " (Brandon) Barkus added. "I hope to get a great crowd out at the Morstad Field on Wednesday at 2 p.m.!"
