SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana men's basketball team fell 87-84 in overtime to No. 8 Northern State Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the NSIC Tournament.
Â
Augustana controlled the first half, 34-28, while Northern State fought back in the second half. It was a jumper from
Tyler Riemersma with .7 of a second on the clock to force overtime.
Â
In what was a high-scoring extra frame, the Wolves clawed a six-point advantage on back-to-back 3-point baskets for a 79-73 lead. On three different occasions, Augustana had the deficit to three points but could not get over that final hump including the final possession of the game.
Â
On the game's final possession, with Augustana trailing by five,
Matt Todd was fouled while attempting a 3-point basket with three seconds on the clock. After swishing the first two free throws, Todd intentionally missed the third where it was corralled by Riemersma who stepped behind the 3-point line and took a shot that bounced off the front iron, closing the game at 87-84.
Â
Riemersma tallied a game-high 25 points and 14 rebounds for his eighth double-double of 2021.
Adam Dykman scored 21 points while Todd and
Michael Schaefer scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Â
The Vikings must now wait out the selections of the NCAA Championships. Augustana was in the top-eight of the region rankings two weeks ago, but fell out after splitting with fellow regionally ranked foe Wayne State this past weekend. The NCAA selection show is slated for March 7.
