MARSHALL, MINN. -- The Augustana women's basketball team's five-game win-streak was ended by Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday afternoon in a 75-62 loss in Marshall, Minnesota.
Augustana (7-4, 6-3 NSIC) for the second time this weekend, found itself down big going into halftime trailing 34-19. Unfortunately, Augustana was not able to find the defensive stops that got them out of trouble Friday night.
A 5-0 run to start the second half was what the Vikings were looking for, although anytime there seemed to be positive momentum for Augustana, the Mustangs (7-3, 5,3 NSIC) found the back of the net from beyond the arc.
The Vikings were able to find holes in SMSU's offense, recording four steals and causing six turnovers in attempts to slow down the Mustangs 3-point barrage in the fourth period.
Augustana shrunk its deficit to nine points at the 1:41 mark in the fourth, compliments from a steal from sophomore Lauren Sees who got a lay-up in transition. However, that is as close as the Vikings would come as the final buzzer sounded with the nod going to the Mustangs 75-62.
The Vikings were led by Aislinn Duffy with 15 points and six rebounds. Lauren Sees also recorded six rebounds in the game. Senior Izzy Van Veldhuizen recorded a career-high eight assists on the day.
The Mustangs were led by Jenna Borchers with 25 points and Abul Akoi with 10 rebounds.
The Vikings return to action next week for their last homestand of the season welcoming city neighbors Sioux Falls to the Sanford Pentagon. Friday's game is slated for 7 p.m. and Saturday's game at 3 p.m. Augustana head coach Dave Krauth will be looking for his 1,000th combined career win as he enters with 652 wins at Augustana and 347 high school victories.
