MORTON, Minn. -- The Augustana women's golf team is in first-place after the first 18 holes of the NSIC Championships after an incredible day-one performance. Senior Alex Stone leads the field while sophomore Molly Stevens and freshman Lauren Tims hold second and third place, respectively.

"While golf is an individual game, we had a week of teamwork starting with a blessing from Pastor Ann," head coach Coralee Jorgensen said. "She spoke of the challenges and how it transfers into hope. We have hope, we have belief and we have game.

"The next few days will be challenging with the forecast calling for not so perfect days for golf. Our team will persevere and we will give it our best. It was a great day to be an Augustana Viking!"

As a team, Augustana shot a first-round score of 296 (+8), 14 strokes ahead of second-place finisher Sioux Falls. It also doubles as the best round of the season for the Vikings as their previous best round was a 305 (+17) in the first round of the Wildcat Classic.

Individually, the aforementioned Stone finished in first-place on the day with a score of 72 which also made her the only golfer to par the course on day one. The seniors' day-one finish is her lowest round of the season and is tied for the lowest round shot by a Viking this season as well.

Stevens finished round one just one stroke behind Stone with a score of 73 and is in sole possession of second-place. Tims finished just one stroke behind Stevens with a score of 74 and is in sole possession of third-place.

Senior Natalie Young also finished in the top-10 for the Vikings with a score of 77, giving her sole possession of seventh-place after day one. Junior Hanna Morin finished day-one in a tie for 18th place with a score of 81.

The Vikings will look to expand their lead when the NSIC Championships continue Saturday morning with a 9 a.m. tee-time.
