ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 16 Augustana women's tennis team started spring break play with a victory over Division I foe, Oakland, bright and early in the sunshine state on Monday morning, winning 4-3.
Augustana remains undefeated at 11-0 this season while Oakland moves to 3-4.
"This was a good team win for the women," head coach Marc Kurtz said. "Yesterday was our first outdoor practice in five months so to come out and get a win against a good team on the second day of our trip is great."
The Vikings picked up two wins in doubles play to claim the doubles point, which was a crucial point en route to the win.
"We started the match strong in doubles with two and three doubles getting quick wins," Kurtz added. "No. 1 doubles got down and then battled back but couldn't quite pull it out."
Laura Arce Vieyra and Gabriela Jancikova won in No. 2 doubles in 6-2 fashion. The same outcome rang true for the Vikings in No. 3 doubles with Aleksandra Kistanova and Emily Granson also winning by way of 6-2.
The Vikings battled with the Golden Grizzlies in singles play, with each team garnering three wins, giving Augustana the advantage, claiming the doubles point earlier in the day.
Florentia Hadjigeorgiou won No. 2 singles for the Vikings in 6-2, 6-2, fashion.
The Vikings were elevated with wins by Arce Vieyra and Kistanova in No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
Arce Vieyra posted a decisive win in No. 3 singles with a score of 6-0, 6-2.
Kistanova defeated Jillian Milano in No. 4 singles by way of 6-3, 6-2.
"Singles was good with the women battling the outdoor conditions and getting used to adapting their style of play," Kurtz said. "Now we need to rest up and get prepared for another strong team Tuesday."
