LIBERTY, Mo. – The Augustana men's tennis team ended its regular season with a victory against William Jewell in Liberty, Missouri, on Sunday afternoon.
"It was a great win for our men today," head coach Marc Kurtz said. "It's always nice to finish the year with a win and Tory Shafer was able to get the clinching win for his last collegiate match.
"It's been a great year for the men. We played a strong schedule and played well all year long. We made a lot of progress this year and I'm excited for our future."
The Vikings finish the regular season with an overall record of 7-9.
Augustana won two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point.
Justin Karcher and Nicholas LaPoint took No. 1 doubles, 6-1. The upperclassmen duo of Shafer and Tyson Cowger won No. 2 doubles with an identical score of 6-1.
The Vikings took five of six matches in singles play, highlighted by Cowger playing in front of his home crowd, winning No. 4 singles in 6-2, 6-3 fashion.
Shafer won his fourth match of the season winning in the No. 5 slot, 6-2, 6-1.
Karcher went to three sets before winning in the No. 1 slot, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2.
Joseph Plachy handled No. 3 singles by way of 6-2, 7-6.
Christian Cortinas earned his second varsity win of his career in No. 6 singles winning 7-6, 6-2.
