SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana women's tennis team ran out of real estate to convert a 4-3 comeback after starting down 3-0 against Washburn in the second round of the Central Region Tournament.
The No. 2 seeded Vikings started the day dropping the doubles point, with only No. 2 doubles team Valeriya Monko and Emily Granson earning a win, 6-4.
Augustana was then tested in singles play, with the Ichabods claiming two points to lead 3-0.
Monko came up short in the No. 1 slot against Marta Torres (6-0, 6-4).
Soon after, Laura Arce Vieyra was bested in the No. 3 position (6-2, 6-3)
Florentia Hadjigeorgiou won the first set of No. 2 singles, 6-4. Her match continued as Svea Crohn claimed the second set, 7-5.
Shortly after Augustana earned its first point, the Vikings got the second point of the day in No. 4 singles.
Lara Schmid claimed set one 7-6. However, in the second set, she took a spill and was unable to continue the match, granting Augustana a point to make it 3-2 in favor of Washburn.
In No. 5 singles, Aleksandra Kistanova also went to three sets. She fell 6-4 in set one and turned around to best Isabella Martensson, 6-1, 6-3, to tie the match at 3-all.
It would come down to No. 6 singles of Augustana's Margarita Chouliara and Washburn's Kinsey Fields to decide who moves on to the NCAA Championship Site in Altamonte Springs, Florida, on May 17-21.
Fields took the first set 6-2, before ultimately taking set two, 7-5.
For the second-straight season, the Vikings bow out to the Ichabods. Augustana finished its season with an overall record of 21-2.
