Vikings Open 2022 Season Against Fort Hays State Sunday

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.-- Augustana soccer begins the 2022 season on its home pitch this weekend. The Vikings are set to host the Fort Hays State Tigers at Morstad Field on Sunday. Kickoff is slated for noon.

Series History

The Vikings and the Tigers last faced each other in 2021 in Hays, Kansas. Fort Hays State was victorious in the matchup, 3-0. The teams have only played on three occasions, and the overall series record sits at 1-1-1. Augustana bested Fort Hays State 2-0 at the start of the 2019 season.

The Tigers

Fort Hays State is slated to open the 2022 season at Sioux Falls Friday afternoon. In 2021, FHSU finished the season with a record of 8-8-3, falling in the first round of the MIAA tournament.

The team was selected to finish seventh in the MIAA Preseason Poll.

The Vikings

Augustana soccer was selected to finish third in the NSIC Preseason Coaches Poll. The Vikings received three votes and 199 points in the poll while Sylvia Fehr and Jillian Barkus were named the Vikings Players to Watch.

Augustana returns 25 student-athletes to the pitch from the 2021 season, with head coach Brandon Barkus adding 11 players to the roster in the offseason. Jillian Barkus, Morgan Keirstead, Sylvia Fehr and Kelly Kleekamp earned NSIC All-Conference honors in 2021.

The team held a conference record of 12-1-2 and an overall record of 14-4-2 in 2021. Augustana tallied 42 goals against NSIC opponents and the Vikings were unbeaten at home.

Fehr, an NSIC All-Conference Second Team honoree, led the team last season with 15 assists and holds the program record for most assists in a single season. Totaling 19 assists in her career as a Viking, Fehr has tied the program record for career assists.

Jillian Barkus, also an NSIC All-Conference Second-Team honoree, made 19 starts during the 2021 season and recorded 10 shutouts in goal.
