MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Augustana women's basketball team defeated the Dragons of MSU Moorhead, 64-40, in Moorhead, Minnesota, on Saturday. The Vikings advance to a 13-3 overall record with a 7-3 record within the NSIC. MSUM moves to an 7-6 overall record while being 4-5 in the loop.
Augustana found its home early in the paint, knocking down eight back-to-back points in the lane to begin the contest. Aislinn Duffy found her momentum early being the first to knock down a bucket for the Vikings. Lauren Sees led the Vikings in the first quarter with 10 points followed by Duffy with six. As a squad Augustana shot 7-of-12 (.583) in the first quarter outshooting the Dragons who were 11-of-33 (.333).
Duffy opened the second quarter with a deep 3-pointer from the top of the key to open all scoring for both teams. Sees knocked down one from deep following her two baskets at the charity stripe to lead the Vikings again in the second quarter with four points. Aby Phipps tied Duffy in scoring during the second quarter with three points off the bench seeing a trip to the free-throw line and a layup. The Vikings saw a mid-quarter 9-0 run to spread their lead to 11 until a late 6-2 run by the Dragons pulled MSUM just short of six points. Augustana led 32-26 heading into halftime.
Sees led both squads in scoring during the first half with 14 points being 2-of-3 from behind the arc. CJ Adamson and Jennifer Aadland both collected four rebounds apiece in the first half.
Sees continued her scoring by opening the second half with a mid-range jumper to pull Augustana up by eight. The 3-point line made the difference for the Vikings who saw five 3-pointers in the third quarter alone. Overall, the Vikings shot an impressive 9-of-22 (.409) from behind the arc while holding the Dragons to just 1-of-17 the entire game.
Augustana cruised through the fourth quarter only allowing one basket to drop for the Dragons. The Vikings finished the afternoon with a 9-0 run highlighted by a Sees 3-pointer.
Overall, Augustana was led in scoring by both Duffy and Sees with 19 points apiece. Aadland led the Vikings in rebounds with eight while also picking up one block.
