Viking Women’s Basketball Drops Season Opener to #10 Central Missouri

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Augustana women's basketball dropped its first game of the season to No. 10 Central Missouri by a score of 83-66. In head coach Jillian Flores Bennett Viking debut, Michaela Jewett led Augustana with 22 points as she went 8-of-17 from the field including five made 3-point field goals. 

Jennifer Aadland tallied a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. 

The Jennies popped out to an early lead in the first quarter as they led 21-17 through the first 10 minutes. Augustana bounced back for the second quarter as a handful of Vikings contributed to the offense. 

Back-to-back three's from Jewett led to Augustana taking the lead midway through the second quarter. Jewett's first triple knotted the game at 27 with 3:49 to go in the quarter. She followed with another open trey to give AU its first lead of the game at 30-27. 

Aadland led the Vikings' polished second quarter with a team-high 12 points as Augustana led 35-30 at the half.

Central Missouri opened up the third quarter with momentum as it grabbed the lead three minutes in. AU traded baskets back-and-forth throughout the remaining seven minutes of play but UCM closed out the quarter with a four point lead. 

The Jennies' rolled their third quarter momentum into the forth as they opened the lead to six. Jewett knocked down her 20th point of the afternoon with a shot from deep to cut the game to three. Kenzie Rensch tied the game at 64-64 with a 3-point dagger but UCM answered with a six-point run to make it 70-64. 

The Jennies' carried their run throughout the remainder of the game as it pushed the score 79-66 with 51 seconds remaining. UCM went on a 15-5 run that spanned over five minutes of play as they secured its third win of the season by a score of 83-66.

Augustana, and Coach Flo, makes its 2023-24 home debut against Sioux Falls Tuesday inside the Elmen Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
