BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Augustana Vikings marched all the way back from down 2-0 to defeat the Bemidji State Beavers 22-25, 16-25, 25-23, 29-27, 15-12 on Friday night.
The Vikings move to 10-15 overall and 7-9 in NSIC play, while the Beavers fall to 8-15, 5-10.
The first ten points would split evenly between the two teams before a 7-0 run put BSU ahead 12-5 in the first set.
Kiylah Franke helped end the run with a pair of service aces in the middle of a 4-0 run, bringing the Vikings back within four at 12-9.
After a 3-0 BSU run, AU charged back with a 5-0 run to trail 15-14 and force a Beaver timeout. After hanging around, the Vikings would score three consecutive points to even the score at 22-22, but BSU scored the final three points to win the set.
An even start to the second set saw a
Sydney Tims kill cap off a two-point spurt to give the Vikings a 10-8 lead. The Beavers surged from there to take a 2-0 lead into set three.
BSU held a lead for nearly the entire third set, but after leading 15-10, wouldn't be able to pull away. The Vikings chipped away, eventually riding a 4-1 run to take their first lead of the set at 23-22. The Beavers tied the score at 23-23, but a
Kia Kriener kill and ace closed out the set and kept the Vikings alive.
In set four, BSU jumped to a 6-2 lead before an 8-2 run, capped by a kill and block by Wente, gave AU a 10-8 lead. The Beavers reclaimed the lead at 11-10, and then went on another 3-0 run after a Viking kill to lead 14-11.
The three point lead held strong at 20-17, but AU charged back. A
Brooke Berens kill kicked off a 5-1 run to give the Vikings the lead back at 22-21. It would be the Beavers who received the first set point at 24-23, but a Kriener kill evened the match at 24-24. From there, each team earned a pair of set points, but a BSU error gave AU the chance for a reverse sweep.
A Kriener kill,
Lucy Bartee kill, and
Gabby Jones service ace pushed the Vikings ahead 3-0 to open the deciding fifth set. BSU scored six of the next eight points to lead 6-5, and then two of the next three points to lead 8-6 at the switch.
The flip allowed the Vikings to regroup, and they did it in a big way. A 6-1 run, punctuated by a Kriener kill, handed AU a 12-9 lead. The Beavers climbed within one at 12-11, but three of the final four points went to the Vikings, including a service error that flew past the end line to secure the reverse sweep.
Kriener delivered a complete game, tying for the game-high with 19 kills while adding six digs and five blocks.
Maya Wente added 10 kills and three blocks, and
Callie Hohenhaus and Tims each tallied nine kills. Hohenhaus helped the defensive cause with five blocks of her own.
Bartee recorded 44 assists, including the 1,000th of her career, and 12 digs, while
Erika Bute had a game-high 32 digs.
The Vikings play their final road match of the regular season on Saturday afternoon, taking on the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles at 2 p.m.
