Augustana Athletics Names Eight as Part of 2023 Hall of Fame Class

Augustana director of athletics Josh Morton is pleased to announce the Augustana Athletics 2023 Hall of Fame Class. The ceremony will take place on Oct. 20 at 5 Oaks in Sioux Falls. The following day, the Augustana football team will host Minnesota State where the inductees will be honored at halftime.

The eight inductees are Runa Falch (cross country/track & field), Jamie Garvey (wrestling), Tom Karbo (cross country/track & field), Tom Queck (football), Cody Schilling (men’s basketball), Lindsey Schultz (track & field), Troy Steen (baseball/men’s basketball) and Julie Tabbert (volleyball).

Excellence is a core value at Augustana and something we take great pride in within our athletics department and this Hall of Fame Class is another example of that,” Morton said. “We have national champions, players of the year and multi-time all-conference and all-America honorees as part of this class. We once again have a variety of generations showing that our excellence is a foundation that we have continued to build upon.

Runa Falch

A national champion, Runa Falch is a 2013 graduate of Augustana after a career that saw her claim the 2011 1,500-meter NCAA Division II National Championship during the outdoor season. In addition to the individual national championship, she was also a member of the 2011 cross country team’s national championship while she was a four-time cross country All-America honoree.

Jamie Garvey

Jamie Garvey

A four-time All-America honoree, Jamie Garvey is a 2002 graduate of Augustana. He twice won the Gregorian Award, accounting for the most pins in the least amount of time at two NCAA Division II National Championships. Garvey placed eighth at the 1999 championship and improved each year with a seventh-place finish in 2000, fourth place in 2001 and third place in 2002. He concluded his career as one of two four-time All-America honorees at Augustana (now part of a group with three).

Tom Karbo

Arguably one of the most talented runners in Augustana history, Karbo was a member of the 2012 NCAA Division II Distance Medley Relay National Championship team. Karbo graduated from Augustana in 2013, concluding a career of three All-America honors, two cross country All-America honors and two indoor track & field All-America honors. The 2012 NSIC Track Athlete of the Year, Karbo placed as the national runner-up in the 2011 steeplechase, an event he remains as Augustana’s record holder.

Queck, a 1978 graduate of Augustana, was named to the 1975 North Central Conference team. At that time, the NCC only had a first team with just two receivers chosen. He concluded his 1975 season with 47 receptions for 572 yards. During the seven-game NCC season, Queck was the statistical champion for receivers with 418 yards while the Vikings went 5-2.

The 2009 NSIC Freshman of the Year, Schilling ended his career as Augustana’s all-time leading scorer with 1,868 points (now fourth all-time). Earning three First Team All-NSIC selections, Schilling, a 2012 graduate, led Augustana to three NCAA tournaments including a pair of Sweet 16 appearances. In addition, he was named to the D2 Bulletin All-Freshman Team in 2009 and a pair of honorable mentions to the D2 Bulletin All-America teams.

Arguably Augustana’s best thrower in program history, Schultz is a five-time NCC shot put champion. The 2008 graduate continues to hold the school record in both the indoor (47-1.25) and outdoor (47-11) shot put while sitting second in the discus (150-0) and hammer throw (156-8).

Troy Steen

Playing two sports at Augustana, Steen, a 1997 graduate, excelled at both basketball and baseball. On the hardwood, Steen made 180 3-point field goals to rank second all-time at Augustana while making 94 starts. On the diamond, he left Augustana as the all-time wins leader with 19. In 1994, he earned All-North Central Conference accolades.

Tabbert, a 1989 graduate of Augustana, is the all-time leader in blocks with 523. Over her four-year career, she accumulated 1,552 points, a total that was first all-time at the point of her graduation. By statistical standards, Tabbert is in the discussion as AU’s all-time best defensive player with 816 digs, an average of 3.34 per set, 523 blocks with 127 of those marked as solo.

The team award is being awarded to the 2012 distance medley relay team of Khor Kong, Travis Beniak, Henrik Hansson and Tom Karbo earned the NCAA Division II National Championship in a time of 9:49.06. That mark topped the previous school record by more than five seconds while the quartet won the championship by more than six seconds.

The Ole Odney Alumni Coach of the Year is Tom Goehle. The 1993 Augustana graduate spent the past seven years at Nebraska as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball program. He was an assistant coach of the 2016 South Dakota women’s basketball team that won the WNIT along with the Summit League regular-season championship. He also has coaching experience at Coastal Carolina, North Dakota State and Sioux Falls. Heavily involved in FCA, Goehle has coached summer basketball in Guatemala, El Salvador and Singapore. He recently got out of coaching to pursue mission work full time. 

The Lefty Olson Award winner for lifetime service and achievement is James Narlin. James, a 1999 graduate of Augustana, has been on Augustana’s gameday crew for more than 25 years, serving as an integral part of the best table staff in the NSIC. Narlin can be seen at center court at basketball games, in the press box at football amongst other Vikings sports such as volleyball, baseball and softball.

The recipients of the Milt and Clara Harvey Award are cited for outstanding contributions of time, service and financial support of Augustana athletics. The recipients for 2023 are Keith and Becky Severson. The 1979 graduates of Augustana are long-time members of the Augustana A-Club. Keith serves on the Augustana Board of Trustees. Together, they have been supporters of renovations to Augustana athletics facilities including Ronken Field and the Larson Track & Field Complex.
