Augustana Volleyball falls to No. 6-ranked SCSU

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The Augustana Vikings closed their weekend on Saturday afternoon, falling 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 in a road match to the No. 6-ranked St. Cloud State Huskies.

The Huskies move to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in NSIC action, while the Vikings fall to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Reagan Jansen closed the match with 10 kills, five digs, and three aces, Kia Kriener tallied eight kills, and Lucy Bartee had 25 assists to lead the offense. Erika Bute collected 22 digs and Maya Wente had five blocks defensively.

The Huskies opened set one scoring 17 of 29 points to lead 17-12 before a 6-0 Viking run handed them an 18-17 lead. The set stayed close to the finish, with five more ties en route to a 23-23 score before a pair of SCSU points closed the set and gave them a 1-0 lead.

Set two looked to be all Huskies early as they scored eight of the first nine points as part of a 10-4 run to open the set. AU charged back, scoring four of the next five points to close the gap to 11-8. That would be as close as the set would come, as the Vikings came within four at 20-16 late before a 5-1 SCSU run handed them a 2-0 advantage.

Through 28 third set points, 11 ties would be seen as neither team would be able to gain momentum to bring the set to 14-14. The Vikings scored the next two points to take a 16-14 lead, but a 9-0 Husky run followed to give them a commanding 23-16 advantage. AU refused to go away, clawing within two at 23-21, but following a timeout, SCSU scored the final two points to cap the match.

The Vikings will have a short turnaround, taking two days before a meeting at No. 8 Southwest Minnesota State on Tuesday at the PE Gym in Marshall, Minn.
